Anybody found a good pad for street and occasional track use yet? I did a search and couldnt find anything definitive. Stock pads seem ok to me on the street but Ive yet have them on the track. Are they suitable?

The gap between a good street pad and a good race pad is enormous.

Get a dedicated set of pads for the track and change them before/after you track the car.

Stock pads work very well on track.

I used my stock pads until they were done. They lasted a lot longer then I thought. The down fall would be once they get hot they start giving up on track, so bleed your brakes every event. I went with the CARBOTECH x6 , its an autocross pad but from talking with the salesman he said for street and track this would be my best bet, the issue with running two pads is the co friction of the two. Once you break in your pads on your rotors you need to turn or sand them to go back and get the best performance from the others. I don't know how true this is, I just spray the hell out of them with brake cleaner and hope for the best.

eek!

EEEKKK!!!!

Consider yourself lucky. . . maybe damn lucky if you ran the pad thickness down as far as it sounds like you did.

There is a reason most track day entities insist on 50% min pad thickness at tech. Never mind that you can burn all the way through that much in a day if the pads are badly enough overmatched by your track driving.

so bleed your brakes every event.
This is a good idea - do it before each event so that you've got fresh fluid in the calipers. But don't count on it to eliminate either kind of fade. It will not fix fade from overheated pads at all, and you may be outgrowing the fluid itself. Get some good DOT4. ATE200 is probably sufficient for most newbies to the track, but Motul RBF600 is significantly better for not that much more $.

AX6 may be enough pad for paced, or carefully driven (read: relatively low peak speeds) sessions where you force yourself to be continually aware that you aren't tracking on track pads. I wouldn't push them past that. Honestly, I wouldn't get out on any track with less than XP10's, and I'm playing with over a hundred HP less than you are..

the issue with running two pads is the co friction of the two.
Wrong. It's a matter of material compatibility/incompatibility between pads of different formulations. The Carbotechs are claimed to be compatible up and down their range, and my experience with XP8's and XP10's bears this out. Swap to or from anything else and you need to plan on sanding or turning the rotors.

Once you break in your pads on your rotors you need to turn or sand them to go back and get the best performance from the others. I don't know how true this is, I just spray the hell out of them with brake cleaner and hope for the best.
If you swap between incompatible compounds without removing the older layer of pad transfer material, you can get into brake judder that'll feel like you've got a bad case of "warped rotors".

I have never heard of people removing this layer with brake cleaner.

Be safe out there, don't take unnecessary risks to hopefully save a few $ . . . especially where your car's brakes are concerned.

Norm pretty well covered it.

I'm a big carbotech fan and will be getting a set in the spring. Probably the AX6 since I focus on street and autocross.

All good information, I did drive the car very very hard and the damn things took it all. Adding brake ducts helped some if you would take it easy a lap but who wants to do that :)
I tried Motul 600 with bad results, pedal feel was very numb, the Motul rep said go to 660. I have used ATE200 before, awesome for the price. I'll prolly switch the Castrol next year once the season starts up again, along with xp12's. Just wanted to see how much the Ax6 could take.

Brake Pads arrived!!! I went with the Carbotech AX6, they should be better then the stock pads and still street able. I hope they don't fail on the road course, and the brake ducts on the car keep them cool enough. It was time to get new pads....HAHAHA

I don't know but I inspected mine at 10k miles and they are almost shot. Will be getting some XP10s for a Rd ATL track day.

I have great pads from Ferodo and Carbotech if you are interested. I run them at the road course with great results! Just pm me!

Carbotech everytime, I run XP10 up front (Alcon 6 pots) and XP8 in the rear (Alcon 4 pots) in my E46 M3 track car.

Great thing is the XP10/XP8 combo works superb on the road, no issues from stone cold at all and I race the M3 a lot, never ever get fade and they have excellent life. I use Motul RBF600 brake fluid. :)

Strictly a guess, somewhere in the 10mm/0.40" range. That's just the friction material, not including the backing plate.

0.40" is what the Carbotechs for my '08 GT measure (I just pulled a new XP12 front pad out of the box to measure), and I can't see pad friction material thickness on the newer cars being significantly less than that.
