I haven't heard any of the tuners mention boost control being a big issue on the stock turbo so I have my doubts that this would be a good investment.

Exactly, we are VERY Pro-Turbosmart. However I haven't found a need to upgrade the factory wastegate actuator just yet.

Nice thanks man, been kicking around getting one to hold me over until the March turbo upgrade.....lol
Let me know, I can get one to your door in a couple days.

which would be best for performance? retune is no problem.

First, Wastegate spring pressures usually are not super accurate in what the manufacture promotes. However, being that this actuator was design specifically for our platform that somewhat goes out the window.

I usually pick a waste gate actuator based of the lowest amount of boost I expect to see at full spool through out the power band.

Here is a little gut driven formula I have used for years.

LOWEST TARGET PSI FULL SPOOL /2

So if your lowest target psi was 20psi at the lowest in your curve you would pick the 10psi actuator. If your lowest was 14-18psi you would pick the 7psi.

By no means is this backed by science its just what i have come up with over the years on several turbo setups.

An article backed with some dyno numbers on the Turbosmart wastegate actuator was posted on StangTV's website here.

Note that this testing was conducted using a 10 lb actuator spring. The linearity of power delivery and the mid-range torque gains appear impressive with the Turbosmart actuator upgrade. Do you think this difference is more related to the change in spring pressure from 7 lbs for the stock unit to 10 lbs for the Turbosmart, or does it have more to do with the spring preload or diaphragm design differences between the OEM and Turbosmart components?

For reference, the StangTV EcoBoost project car is running the following mods:

  • Roush RS1 package
  • Engine: Stock 2.3 liter
  • Airaid Cold Air Intake
  • SCT X4 Tuning
  • Exhaust: Livernois mid-pipe with Roush active mufflers.
  • Wastegate actuator: Turbosmart
  • Blow-off valve: Turbosmart
  • Suspension: BMR
  • Differential: Ford Racing Torsen w/3.73 gears
  • Data Acquisition: AEM AQ-1
  • Trans: Stock MT-82 w/MGW Race Spec shifter.

Also on the topic of potential upgrades to improve boost control and spool characteristics, StangTV claims some similarly notable gains from the Turbosmart Kompact BOV upgrade in their article here.

If these numbers are valid and repeatable, the Turbosmart wastegate actuator and BOV seem like very cost-effective and important upgrades. What do you guys think?

From my testing on the Fiesta ST it is possible but you can get the same gains with the tune. I want to get one on a mustang and see if it smooths out boost as that would be my intended use for it. That, and also keeping boost deep into the rpm range.

On some setups the stock spring pressure is not enough when boost goes a lot more than the spring rated . (like running 5lb spring and 15+ boost), the pressure can creep the valve open small amount .

I used to increase the pressure on the waste gates that were adjustable and if I had way to adjust total max boost . Just a few lbs can help .
Sometimes the preload is not to much .

Are the stock ones threaded turnbolt end on them ?
Edit; ok that link shows stock one is adjustable but they say the unit is weak .
