So for no apparent reason ford cut corners and cut out like half of what they should have on the front grill mesh. It looks pretty odd having those filled in and a giant square of them cut out from the factory in the middle. Has anybody taken a dremmel and cut the rest of the holes out?

Really? You don't think that has anything to do with airflow vs aerodynamics?

No ive read in other places it cuts down on aero and the functionality of the grille.

More I know more than a dozen Ford engineers doing it for combined hundreds of year of experience  People will never learn

I definitely think you should start cutting holes in the grille that Ford tested thoroughly with aerodynamic computer modeling and possibly even a wind tunnel.

Please provide your sources on this; I don't think they are correct on this.

The size of the opening is dictated partially by styling. They made it relatively large to maintain the Mustang historical look.

However, cooling purposes, less airflow is required. If Ford had all the holes open, you would have increased drag and front end lift due to all the air entering the engine bay and getting blocked by the engine and trapped under the hood. Blocking many of the holes limits the air that can get into the engine compartment, forcing it around the outside of the car, which reduces drag and lift.

I agree that when viewed straight on, it looks a little funky, but the design is that way for a reason, not because they were being cheap.

Well all those Shelby designers that have been putting fully open grills in performance mustangs for the last 5 years including the 2015 super snake and Shelby gt to cool those large radiators must not know what they are doing.

You are making two wrong assumptions.

First, you are assuming that they did it on purpose. It is possible that Shelby doesn't give a fuck about the increased drag on the car.

Second, you are assuming that the cooling needs of a Shelby are the same as your stock GT.

And your assuming I or 99% of drivers care about a miniscule amount of increased drag on a mustang GT that most people will never break 150mph in. The fact is this thread was started with a question asking if anybody had done it. I care that it looks stupid and think the open grills on shelbys and the BOSS look much better. You must not know about any exterior mods and leave everything to ford engineers.

Also heres a picture of that gt350 designed by ford engineers. It uses the exact cooling my PP GT does. Looks pretty open to me....:ford:

The GTs always have heat extractors for the air to escape from, and the EB makes up for having bigger holes in the grille and more space behind it by having the active grille shutters

What ppl are taking issue with is you act like they just did that for no reason. It was obviously for aero purposes that they didn't open the entire grille

To answer your question, yes. Somewhere here there is a thread where the guy opened up all the holes. Don't think he reported any issues, but I'm sure he hasn't done wind tunnel testing, fuel consumption testing, etc.... You can even purchase aftermarket open grills. Not sure if and how cooling is effected.
But one cannot compare the Shelby front end to the Mustangs. Completely different profiles and design. It may look the same, but all the sheet metal to include inner fender panels are different with a lower designed profile.

Thought it also something to do with hood lift at high speeds. I remember seeing a picture of someone driving at 100+mph with a grill delete and his hood was lifted up crazy high.

Thanks for the replies I didn't think about the hood lift issues and that could play a major role.

Yeah thats the reason why I didn't do the grill delete. I liked the look but I know ford must have had a good reason to block of the grill and the gt350 also has the grill blocked off.
