What's the point of clay barring brand new paint?

To get the iron rail dust off and out of the paint. Prevents spots from forming as it rusts. Worse on lighter colors.

You'll be surprised how much smoother the paint is when done, even when brand new.

Thanks. I hadn't considered that. I haven't even performed an analysis of my paint condition yet, so that might make a lot of sense.

If you want to remove rail iron from your new car, use Iron X BEFORE clay barring.
The clay supposedly will lift out the iron particles along with other solid contaminants.
But I would rather have the iron dissolved off the clear coat before I start to drag the clay over it.

Since we seem to be in all the same threads, I had a list of products recommended to me by a professional detailer in the GTA that has done some incredible work on basically every exotic known to man.

First of all, this website has better prices than anywhere else in canada that ive found (including amazon)

Here is the list of stuff you'll want.

6 - Microfiber towels 16x16
1 - Microfiber towel 25x36
1 - tire shine applicator
1 - Wash glove microfiber or wool
1 - Grit Guard for bucket
1- Sonax Wheel cleaner full effect
1 - optimum leather protect-ant
1 - optimum power clean (engine cleaner)
1 - optimum no rinse & wax (substitute optimum no rinse if you dont want wax)
1 - optimum instant detailer & gloss enhancer (substitute car-pro reload if you opt for non wax soap)
1 - optimum tire shine (substitute carpro PERL if you want a longer lasting but more expensive option)
1 - CarPro Iron-x (to remove rail deposits)


I specifically mentioned claying the car for rail dust and he said he wouldn't.. and that iron-x should do the job. If by some miracle it doesn't go for the optimum clay towel (clay bar in towel form, easier on paint)



All this stuff with free shipping and taxes ran me just under 300 bucks Canadian, so its not free.. But I figure on a 45k car why not.

eshine.ca is good. The selection is decent, but not as large as auto obsessed.com Basically the exact same prices, some stuff is cheaper at one than the other.

Also, the clay step is not just for the rail dust, and yes Iron X will remove that, there will be other bonded contaminants that Iron X won't dissolve that should also be clayed off before any sort of finishing is done.

3-glaze (from chemical guys)
4-jet seal (from chemical guys)
5-butter wax (from chemical guys)
6-VO7 touch up
7-jet seal rims then wheel wax

Curious, is wheel wax a different type of wax than just normal car wax?

Just asking here....isn't there a period of time after the car has been painted that you don't want to wax it? Doesn't it need some time to cure? I'm not speaking as if I know at all- I'm quite uneducated about this. Please feel free to respond!

Nah, most of the cars are painted weeks before it gets to the customer. A lot of them sit at the plant waiting to ship and then on a train for days. By the time you get it its safe- that paint is at least 1-2 weeks old.

My dealer (and I) use Iron X to dissolve any iron dust that will definitely coat your car, if it was transported by rail. Spray car (don't actually touch it) to wash off any loose material. I use a foam cannon, then rinse. Spray on Iron X (don't touch car)...let it sit (not in the sun) for a few minutes. Car will turn purple as Iron X dissolves the iron particles. Rinse off the Ironx before it dries. Iron X is fairly inexpensive, so I then spray on Iron X a second time, wait, then rinse. If there is not much purple, your car is now clean of iron particles.
I then clay bar the car using a clay bar lubricant, doing a small section at a time. Don't rub in a circular motion. Gently wipe off with a microfiber cloth. Apply a sealer coat, buff, apply a good wax, and buff.

Please do. I told the dealer not to wash/detail the exterior. I'm just now hearing lots about this IronX, but not sure if I can get it anywhere around here in a timely manner. I was just going to wash, clay, wash, wax.

Thinking that should get a significant amount of any iron/muck left on the car after transport.

Any chances of the Iron-X causing damage or staining? I am not familiar with it.
