I have jacked right here 20 times already. Then install jackstands in the grooves on each side.
Thanks, I just crawled around under there and those locations are looking like a good option.

I say go for it. I've used a floor jack on rear diff on all types of cars and trucks with no downside. It'll be fine. You're not gonna dent or bend anything, and it won't ruin anything "in the long run".

Thanks that's what I was also thinking...

I just got under there and can see two huge bolts going through the the frame on both ends through the diff housing, put one light pump on the jack and the whole rear came up as it should, no fatigue anywhere. Pretty sure the sheer strength of those bolts is greater than a couple thousand lbs...

The diff is NOT designed to hold the weight of the car. Don't do that.
Where did you locate this information?

Out of your a$$?

Please post your source.

I will jack it up there, EVERY SINGLE TIME I NEED TO FOR AS LONG AS I OWN THE CAR.
And
I promise nothing will ever fall off the car or bend or break.

Internetengineers. I love em!

Edit! I see you don't even own a 15 mustang yet!!!! But your sure on here telling people what not to do!!! Oh my god this is awesome. Thanks man, seriously, you made my day

When I did my exhaust I used the jack points on the side frame of the vehicle with my floor jack and then placed the jack stands where the red circles are above. Worked great.

In closing Id just like to mention that I ended up going this route with zero problems. Car sounds proper with that snarl from the H pipe now. 3" MBRP Street aluminized exhaust for like $560, can't beat that. Still tame enough to start the car at 6am without waking up the neighborhood but nasty when you punch it.

I used some towels to pad the floor jack and then used the diff. I had no issues and have done this for many cars without issue.

A block of wood with some rubber on one side between the jack and the diff is what I've used on previous vehicles. My last car (2006 WRX Wagon) was about 3250 lbs and was jacked up from the rear diff all the time... Never had a problem. IIRC the service manual even mentioned using it. For those who are saying that the diff is not designed to support the entire weight of the vehicle.... it would never support the entire weight as long as there are other points in contact with the ground like the front tires or jack stands under the front jack points. You are only lifting the rear end of the vehicle by the diff, not the entire car.

Use a little common sense and pay attention while lifting the vehicle. If it doesn't look, sound, or feel right then go with the jack points. Even they can be damaged from a floor jack if not careful. The pinch welds can bend if not supported properly. Using a jack pad designed for pinch welds like this http://www.ebay.com/bhp/floor-jack-adapter can help.

The diff was the recommended rear jacking point on my last 2 rwd cars. Granted, they were quite a bit lighter than the Mustang, but it should be ok.

I'm fairly certain that whatever bolts that are holding that diff to the chassis have a combined shear yield much higher than 1900 or so lbs.

Exactly, this thread turned into a mechanical aptitude test more or less. After getting under there and looking for myself I now know that the setup is just like every other car, no problem with jacking the rear at diff.

I'd say the most valuable thing I learned in this thread is that this is not a great place for accurate mechanical knowledge specific to the s550. Bunch of folks reading the owners manual that comes in the glove box and answering questions as if they've been an ase certified ford technician for 20yrs lol. Pretty comical.

you can put the jack wherever you want

The reason I wouldn't jack up any car on the differential is I know there is a bolted cover there with fluid sealed inside.

If the housing is aluminum, I would sort of be concerned that I don't warp the material or do something that could cause any kind of crack or crevice.

When you see people with leaky differentials, I am sure if you ask them "hey where do you normally jack up the car"...they likely will say "oh i just put the jack under the differential.

This is why I wouldn't jack up a car there. But as post # 27 stated, everyone has their own opinions about what they want to do so it's a driver's preference.

I do have a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. But even if I didn't I still wouldn't put a jack there, but I do put jacks under lower control arms all the time, and I know the manual doesn't say to put jacks there, but I do it. :)

Doubt you'd be laughing if you ruined the rear end. I don't see the comedy in caution when dealing with a brand new $40k vehicle. Following the owner's manual keeps your warranty intact. Disregarding it does not.

I used to jack up my s2000 and wrx from their puny rear diffs...no problems. Everyone I've ever known that has worked on cars has jacked up from the rear diff. Nobody has ever done anything that the nay sayers said could happen in this thread. Scared lemmings.
