I'm looking for a garage heater or space heater for my 2 car garage. I'm in upstate New York and the temperature is averaging around 0 every night becoming unbearable to be in the garage.

Anyone have experience or knowledge of which one to get?

Because it's a small car garage is there a potential risk to body panel damage or damage on the car with the heater close?

Does your Garage have a door to the inside of the house?
Insulate your Garage Door with Syrofoam boards. I did this and it is always around 5-6° C in the garage while it is -10 °C outside.

Thanks I just read about that too. Problem thrre is no insulation above it.

I do have my door to the house in the garage.

I figured I could just get a oil based space heater? Just enough to warm up the garage where I can be comfortable inside working on my car instead feeling like im out in the elements.

Kerosene heater would work just to get it comfortable in there. I wouldn't leave it on for a long time being closed up in there due to carbon monoxide.

This. No way you heat an uninsulated 2 car garage with a single plug in unit.

I have a friend who heats his 2 car insulated garage with 2 big electric baseboard heaters. But they are 240v. He keeps it about 10C (by choice).

If it is just to keep you warm while you are working, maybe one of those focused radiant heaters could work?

Really, your first step should be to completely insulate the garage. Even then it is going to be really tough to keep a decent temp. with 120v - you'll need multiple heaters for sure and even then....

I installed a heater in my garage. It's 240v and has a thermostat build into it. If I could figure out how to send a photo from my phone to this website I would. I did this like two weeks ago and it is great. It hangs from the ceiling and I keep it on low my garage is averaging 50 degrees. This is the same one I have.

Ive got a 1 Car Garage with insulated Garage Door. I've got an electric oscillating heater with a timer. It keeps it within 14-9°C which is good enough for me because its -20°C outside.

This is an example of a decent heater for your 2 car garage. It would require a (2) pole 30 Amp dedicated circuit from your panel

My garage is TINY. Just enough room for the Stang and for me to be able to walk all around it... sideways. I use this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Honeywell-Surround-Heat-Heater-HZ-0360-WMT/15063190 and it keeps it nice and warm while I'm out there tinkering, or messing with stuff (or keeping it heated for the car, cause I'm weird.) The benefits with that style heater is the heat goes everywhere, not just blowing directly on the car. You can also try some of their larger room oil based heaters which do a pretty decent job as long as you don't need heat "quickly."
