I was with a buddy of mine a few weeks ago getting his 2013 GT dyno tuned and JLT done. Car is bone stock other than the JLT, Tune and Outlaw Axle back...the tuner was able to get him to 392 (hoped for 400) at the wheels but stated there was some timing still being pulled out at the top end. He asked my buddy what kind of gas he had in it which he had put Shell 93. The owner/tuner stated that Shell gas has not yielded good results for them and something to the effect of the detergents they add specifically and something to do with octane ratings before the detergents are added. He even stated that if you get Shell gas and another brand and put them in clear jugs you can even see how "yellowish" the shell gas is. He went on to say that surprisingly they have had the best luck with QT gas even on his 1200rwmp Hellion Twin turbo 2011 Coyote. Anyways, I know this guy from way back and he has been doing it a very long time. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same experience with Shell gas and what gas you guys run. Key note, we are in the DFW Texas area.

I've not had any issues as long as I get my gas from a top tier distributor.

Also might not hurt to add some octane booster to a tank - cheap insurance against low quality fuels.

I had the same problem with mine jlt and custom tune, had afull tank of 93 Shell v power and gained 16hp , my buddy with gas from another place no Shell for sure got 22 hp.

Same car and setup.

Thanks for sharing, I wish I knew this before my dyno run.

I think it's very dependent on the station. Also know winter fuel can sometimes also be a problem, whichever additive they put in fuel to make sure it won't freeze seem's to effect the rate it burns.

At a tuning shop I have a lot of experience at we tuned Subaru's and Evo's all time and the shell station around the corner from us was the most consistent. Doesn't mean there isn't a chance of getting poor fuel at some point from there.

Good info to know though, he could always go fill up else where and datalog it.

Very true...I didnt think about the "winter blend". It just seems so hit or miss station to station. :frusty:

I wouldn't worry too much about it, most of the newer cars these days are so dependent on the knock sensors. As long as they are on and fully functional you'll be ok :)

What you can do at the track if you do race is mix in some 100 octane so make sure the car is getting allllll the timing at the track or for a fun weekend.

Will running the higher octane fuels hurt the O2s? I remember back in the day if you ran the higher octane race fuels that it would foul out or burn up the O2s.....gosh, I have been out of this for a while....trying to re-learn now.

As long as the fuels are unleaded you'll be fine, you'll get into leaded fuels in the 110 octane range. Most of the 100 octane that is readily available at pumps is unleaded.

Finding good gas was what ended my tuning for any car ever again. Its a never ending PITA.
