Yeah, I`m back. Not to debate or discuss the matter of DRL`s which I previously promised not to discuss any further (but) the matter of the use of directional signals. You may or may not be aware but 99% of drivers in the State of "Floriduh" including local Police and Sheriffs Departments no longer use the dedicated stem on the steering column that years ago was used to put ones "blinkers" on. The good news is that "horn blowing" more then makes up for the lack of directional signal use. Must be something to do with that I 95 corridor, you think? NY and NJ quickly comes to mind!
Oh my God if there's one thing I can't stand it's people who don't use turn signals when they change lanes. It takes just about zero effort, and makes things SO much safer. Of all of the things that annoy me about other drivers, that's definitely at the top of the list.

There is a clearly identifiable and very basic cause here. Why isn't the root cause [of not signaling turns] being addressed? If failure to signal is that widespread, it'd be a money maker for the town until people finally wised up to their responsibilities.

A band-aid electro-mechanical "fix" won't correct the bad mental outlook, and even the best brakes and grippiest tires have limits. Physics > nannies.

This doesn't make sense, though. "We've got a problem, and this problem is caused by people engaging in bad behaviour. We can take steps that will mitigate the effects of that bad behaviour, but we'll decide not to take those steps because it's easier to just tell people to behave better. Except we're not going to divert any special funding towards education aimed at ensuring better behaviour."

Also, heated seats are amazing in the winter time. Yes, yes, I got by for decades without them, but it's just so much nicer to not be freezing the entire time I'm driving in the winter.

Apparently, it was a local culture that was allowed to fester into a fairly serious problem. You'd think that the State would have noticed that something wasn't quite right years ago.

DRL's certainly won't solve it, and automated braking systems are very likely to bring a couple of new "unexpected" side effects / unintended consequences all their own into the mix. tsunami should be careful what he wishes for.

Norm;
You got "here" rather then "there" only half right. Civility and common courtesy travels along I 75 South from the Mid-West and ends up somewhere between Sarasota and Naples FL. Stupidity and rudeness travels along I 95 and unfortunately ends up somewhere between West Palm Beach and Miami. Some stay for the Winter and all too many forget to return back home! The local Police and Sheriff`s Department I would imagine are (not) Snowbirds who fail to utilize their directional signals?

Phil - by 'here' I meant South Jersey, as opposed to 'there', meaning North Jersey and the metropolitan NYC area.

My son drives an 18-wheeler for a living and first notices the difference starting somewhat further south, I think somewhere between Richmond and DC.

Norm; Being originally from Western Massachusetts, I know the profound differences between Northern NJ and Southern NJ. Those of those residing west of Worcester to the NY/VT line are living in the (outback) of MA. Bostonians like to visit Stockbridge and Tanglewood but other then use sending our Tax dollars to Boston, the don`t know we exist. Much like SE FL, Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are but a 2 hour drive to Collier County & Naples in SW FL but a different world completely that only shares similar weather.

Wow, I am at the drive in right now and can't find a way to turn these damn things off. I assure those that question the reason to turn off the DRLs, everyone will be pissed if you have lights on at a drive in. That said, I could not find a solution in the thread. Is there one?

Is your engine running? My understanding is the shark gill lights are on with the engine. The DRL's only come on when you disengage the hand brake. When you put on the hand brake, they go off.
