While driving a GT500 this weekend, this thread popped into my head. Been mostly driving a GT350 lately, so it was interesting to switch for the day.

I voted that a GT500 is not an upgrade.

Here are a few things that would cause me to change my vote:

Full power, cooled/heated Recaros
Full power telescoping steering wheel
Power adjustable pedals
Front facing camera for curb avoidance
Interior accent lighting (401A Mustang GT style)
Leather wrapped center console (cup holder/shift dial area)
Leather wrapped horn/air bag cover
Leather wrapped glove box
Leather wrapped lower door panels (to match the upper half)
Seatbelt accent color option

Things like that would give the car an "upgrade" feel. Right now, it's just a different engine and trans. 🤷‍♂️

HAH see all of these things I consider a downgrade. Car is too heavy already and doesn't need more motors and gears. They are too slow too, manual is faster for all of it. I vote that neither the GT350 or 500 is a luxury car. They are luxuries, but not luxury cars. Take 600lbs out of the GT500 - that would be a absurd weapon.

Totally agreed that the curb weight of your 2-seat and also of the 4-seat 3rd Gen GT500 examples are certainly overweight.

Was fortunate to own a few GT350R Base models and suggest that the curb weight difference between your GT500 CFTP unit and a Base R model are some ~575 pounds with a great deal of that extra weight on the GT500 being concentrated in the front end of the car with probably somewhere around 56% being up front.

With respect to a GT350 or GT500 being a luxury car, not sure where that has previously ever been suggested?

Oh its not an argumentative statement. I just figured that wanting leather and comfort options generally imply wanting more of a luxury car which I totally get. My personal opinion is that neither car is much of a luxury car to begin with and all those features keep adding cost and weight.

Corner weights on the GT500 are about 1150 up front and 910 in the rear which is about 56%. Spending about 90 grand would make it 150-200lbs lighter than a GT350R and cost you about as much as a Dark Horse SC track pack.

Totally agree that adding comfort features always increases weight and cost to any Mustang let alone the heavy 3rd Gen GT500.

With respect to somehow making a GT500 some 150-200 pounds lighter than a GT350R, that could have never happened based mostly on the fact that the GT500 comes equipped with a CPC 5.2L supercharged Predator V8 which creates a tremendous amount of heat soak whereas the GT350R did not come with those items along with being resonator delete.

Just adding a supercharger let alone the additional 6 engine coolers/heat exchangers and a heat exchanger for the rear differential, I suggest that the curb weight for a GT500 was increased by at least 175 pounds therefore difficult to comprehend how Ford would produce a lighter GT500 model than a GT350R by 150-200 pounds?

When living in the Phoenix area some 6 years ago I decided to take my 2018 GT350R Base model and my 2020 GT350R HEP (sans the Technology Package) and weighed them back-to-back with a full tank of full and weighed them at a certified CAT scale.

Weighed them twice and in both directions with JR157 coming in at 3,620# and LR041 coming in at 3,710#.

the GT350 has a oil cooler, trans cooler, and the diff cooler

The GT500 just has the blower heat exchanger and the auxiliary radiator added

Understand but you have to agree that the additional weight of a supercharger along with the 6 heat exchangers added a great deal of extra weight to the engine compartment V a NA GT350R.

I don't want any of that stuff either. That's just what I would consider an "upgrade". What else is there to make one an upgrade over another?

I don't think any of us know after 15 pages of talking about it.

Well, IIRC, the GT500 has larger brakes and wheels. It also has different styling on the exterior. I think the GT500 hood is cooler looking than that of the GT350, but I prefer the nose of the GT350 over the GT500.

Even the sound of one vs. the other could be a big deal to someone.

We need more discussion on this important topic.

I quit following this thread a few pages ago when it became clear that it was too hard to keep on topic and that there were such extreme differences in people’s ideas of what constituted an upgrade. Nice to see that the conversation is carrying on though.
