if you're anxious a guy i work with had a very high end can bus immobilizer installed on his ZL1

It requires that you push a button combo when you start the car every time, without the button combo the can bus is basically entirely dead so the car can't be started. It has some carjack mode too thats supposed to guard against that,

Has no lights or visible boxes, the guy that installed it didn't even tell him where the thing is, its entirely transparent. Definitely a nice system, but in our state there's barely any car theft at all, he just wanted it for peace of mind. Also ZL1's like mustangs aren't targeted by thieves as much as the dodges and hyundai's
Out of curiosity, what does something like that cost?

Greets all, Hope everyone is doing well.

I had some questions for discussion and/or answers about our cars and throwing some ideas around.

2 nights ago there was a report on the news about a woman who had bought her dream car a rare purple Dodge charger and she normally would block it in but this day she was running late a forgot. Well on the security camera you can see these guys break the driver side window in her driveway and then hop in and apparently by attaching a unit to the ODB-II port they were able to replicate a key to start and drive off the car.
This is more of a Mopar problem. It's been on the news intermittently for more than 10 years.
I think it was 2012 I saw a YouTube video where a reporter sat in some Jeep SUV, and hackers outside the vehicle used the Bluetooth connection to start the vehicle, lock the reporter in, and drive him around the parking lot with a laptop.
The laptop could control the electronic throttle, the EPAS, and somehow even the brakes.

If thieves now have to pick the lock, get in the car, and plug in, that's a sign that they've stepped up their Bluetooth security. 🙃

One of the best defenses for your car is if your neighbors have something else that looks like an easier target. Especially Mopars and Kias.

i can’t remember exactly the number but it was pretty expensive, it was enough to where it was justifiable for the cost and difficulty of replacing the ZL1

This was my main reason of switching to ford due to the lack of fca/stellantis/dodge not being held accountable for their theft security of their vehicles I had 3 dodge challengers
2011 v6 a 2014 dodge challenger srt
2020 scat pack which was the only car that was stolen under 30seconds in front of my home with no alarm going off or anything.Ive sued and won and moved on to my 2019 ford mustang Gt premium and haven’t looked back since.

Well this brings up another point with our alarms, clearly the glass break sensor isnt on our cars as far as I know, so when does the alarm actually go off?

Also As i said I wasn't going to mention the idea from Yester year but I'm curious about other peoples thoughts, it was a "reed switch" in-line to the fuel pump or starter.

I don't worry about theft. It's insured. Also don't worry about GPS tracking. If someone takes the car, I don't really want it back, anyway.
I have GPS on mine. It's not about wanting the car back, it's about helping catch the F&^%$ers.

After having a car back after a theft 15 or so years ago I will say never again. As much as there was very little damage and all that was repaired by the insurance company including a full set of new tyres the car was never the same. Nothing you could actually say was wrong it just seemed to feel different. They probably revved the nuts off it.
I sold it a few months later.

Google ‘Autowatch Ghost’ (if it’s available that side of the pond) :like:

WD :like:
Seems to be a UK unit I doubt we'd find anyone here in the states that would do it right plus I dont know how I'd feel about doing a sequence of buttons, it'd be like a master lock combination. I still like the reed switch idea.

I wouldn't worry about it at all the primary theft targets are 4X4s and luxury SUv for war zones, Africa, middle east, UA and local resale when revinned. ,maybe there's a special order for GT500 or 350.

As long as you hide your vin and put an OBD port lock on there's little chance anyone taking it, especially an Ecoboost haha.

Well on the security camera you can see these guys break the driver side window in her driveway and then hop in and apparently by attaching a unit to the ODB-II port they were able to replicate a key to start and drive off the car. this kind of unnerved me since the whole thing happened at 7AM in a neighborhood.

I know we have a GPS shark fin on the top of our car, but being that the cable is right under the back deck (Unless I am wrong, which is dumb to have it that apparently easy to remove) removing or cutting it to prevent tracking (even though its not real time tracking) would make the app useless. For this reason I have added hidden safe guards in my car, but I was wondering if anyone else has added any or have ideas they want to throw around? Between being able to unlock garage doors, dupe keys etc I thought this would be a good discussion to have in this day and age to get ahead of these assholes.

One of the things I was going to look into is a real time GPS unit hidden in the car that is not as obvious as the one Ford put in, and also I was wondering if anyone knows if duping a key using the ODB-II port is a possibility with our cars as well, or if Dodge just has an exploit that someone found?
With my Sisters demon, we got anothe OB-II port and pigtail from a junkyard, and stuffed the cars unit out of the way, and somewhat hidden, put the junkyard port in the stock location , and hooked up a power lead and a ground, so it not seem like it isn't the one connected to the cars system.
Most of the "pro's" are running around with repo-man set up's on a f-250 and the like. Grab it, run and stuff it in a container and pull the battery + lead.
Most of the Mopars are jacked to be used in street take overs. To be beat on, trashed then left for dead, sadly today you can't do any "Street justice " as they have more rights than the victim.

If a thief wants your car no amount of security is going to stop them, worse case they come with a truck and drag it on . Make sure you are well insured and never leave the keys easy to find stored in a RFID pouch.
