Is there any assured way that my dealer can have my order include Goodyear HP A/S tires rather than the Pirelli P Zero A/S tires that Ford started to put on Mustangs? I know that Pirelli Summer Tires are quite good but was informed that Pirelli A/S tires don't even come close in quality compared to the Goodyear A/S.

Sorry, its a crap shoot. Early production V6 Coupes/Fastbacks had both Pirelli P Zero HP A/S Tires and some had the Goodyears. My V6 Convertible was an early build 11/24 and it came with Goodyears. Since the S550 Mustangs use Pirelli`s for all its 19`` and 20`` Tire configurations, they might have run short of the 18`` Goodyears and substituted them with the Pirelli`s since that is one of their primary Tire Vendors.

Who informed you of that, and by what basis was the quality difference qualified?

Goodyear vs Pirelli A/S tires.

TireRack.com has finally gotten a good number of reviews for A/S tires on Mustang Ecoboosts. Majority of reviewers stated that the Pirellis wore out a lot faster than Goodyears, only 20K, 30K at best. Even more worrisome, most reviewers talked about the Pirelli P Zeros hydroplaning badly. With recommendations not to buy if driven a lot in rainy conditions.
My dealer has said that all of the Mustangs that have arrived since early November have been on Pirellis. But most of his vehicles are GTs which come with summer tires, and Pirellis still have a good reputation with summer tires.
It is A/S tires that are getting a bad reputation.
Dealers have no input to Ford about the brand of tire for 18" A/S.

I think Ford has returned to putting the Goodyear HP A/S Tires back on all V6 with 051A Package and EB with 18`` Tire configurations. I drove Vehicles with both the Pirelli and Goodyears and can`t vouch for long term tread wear but IMO, the Goodyears were a lot quieter and produced less road noise. BTW, Ford has used HP Goodyears for many years on all Police Interceptors as their A/S tire of choice too.

Maybe the Pirelli P Zero HP A/S Tires are pretty good after all. A brand new Bentley Convertible (14`) was next to me at a red light and I noticed it too had the Pirelli tires on it. Don`t think they would put crappy tires on a 400K Vehicle, you think?

Pirellis on a Bentley

I don't think that Bentley would be putting on the same Pirelli All Season tires as found on a Mustang. The four tires on a Bentley would probably buy you a GT. As mentioned before, the Pirelli summer tires
on the Mustang have a pretty good reputation. It's the all-season that has had some crappy reviews.

In the 8 years I've had Mustangs with these tires, I've had acceptable experience with them when used as daily driver tires. They've lasted 40,000 miles with rotation every 5000. They've been driven on roads with snow, wet and cold, dry and hot. I've not noticed excessive road noise, except when ready to be replaced. I have NOT attempted to use them in high performance driving situations (drag racing, autocross, road racing). For spirited street driving, I have not felt insecure about the grip level.

My experience over the past 16 years driving year around on "hot" Florida highways, streets, and roads has shown me that in these parts, if you get 30,000 miles of usage with any brand of tires, regardless of cost, you did damn good. Since we never get even a snow flake, Winter driving is not an issue. Wet driving conditions, are. My personal main concern for a "daily driver" is a quiet Tire at both city and highways speeds.

FWIW, the Ecoboost Premium I test drove before purchasing my Ecoboost Premium with PP had Goodyear F1 Asymetric A/S tires.

I think FRAP has switched back to the Goodyears Tires for its 18`` Wheel/Tire Configurations. The temporary early production move to Pirelli`s must have been caused by a shortage of inventory of Goodyears. Better to substitute to another Brand that you already use in 19`` & 20`` anyway then to shut the production line down due to commodities issues.
