How Important IS Color Choice?

I like them too. Weird how they don't appear to be painted the same way as the Limited Edition 50 Year Anniversary Mustang. I think they're just silver, whereas the ones on the LE are silver with gray accents.

After exchanging thoughts about the wheels and option packages, I'm going to have to go with the 19" Black wheels in the Performance Package, however. Not my first choice, but they'll do. And if they don't grow on me, I have the option to swap them out with someone who prefers the PP wheels over their 50 Year wheels.

I actually like both of those colors, but they are off my radar because I simply cannot afford the LE Mustang. I'm lucky to be considering the EcoBoost!

There was a Kona Blue LE Mustang under wraps (which the salesperson kindly unveiled for me) at the dealership where I test drove a Black EcoBoost. It was pretty stunning in the showroom. Had the ceramic leather interior as well. Classy looking ride, for sure.

As for the Wimbledon White, it appears to be more subtle than the Oxford White; it almost appears to be eggshell colored in the photos I've seen.

I gave my opinion on this earlier in the thread, but since you are into color/color theory/reproducing color, I'll remind you of the most important factor.

Light

ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Many of my clients are shocked to see how different their press sheets (and proofs) look under different lighting conditions in the light booth. Light can make or break a job!

And I totally agree with your thesis about choosing a color that is best represented in the most common form of lighting. The car will look its best in the proper setting, especially if that setting is everyday.

I have seen all of the 15 Mustang colors in person now, and quite a few with the Perf Pkg. I personally like the darker colors (Ruby Red, DIB, and Black) with the optional 20" wheels, but with the Perf Pkg's black wheels I like some of the lighter colors better for the contrast (white, for example) but think the DIB looks great with the black wheels, also.

I've owned 4 blue Mustangs, so I'm partial to DIB, but I also absolutely love Ruby Red on my '14 GT and on most cars it's offered on.

OP: Have U seen the blue in person? Because I can say it's awesome with the whiteish wheels of the 50th. I hated it on the ST focus but on the mustang its crazy sharp.

I drive a ruby red focus (bought from Brain's dealership) and I came out to it the other day at work to find a note on the windshield. At first I was like "great, a ticket", but the note said "I love the color of your car." Have no idea who… just some random stranger who was moved by the color enough to take the time to leave a note. It's a beautiful color. Having said that, I think my next mustang will be Guard. The '09 bullitt was my favorite mustang and since this one will be my last stang, I'm going with the characteristics closest to the one I miss the most. Too bad you can't remove the 5.0 badge without leaving holes behind :rant:

I've been set on black because it looks sinister but have started to consider other colors because of the black pp wheels. White and ingot contrast the black wheels best in my opinion.

I think the answer for me though is to just stick to my first instinct of black, and plastidip the wheels silver or something.

Still haven't seen one in person. I've already had two blue Mustangs, though. I was trying to go for something different. Different from what I've had, that is. But you're right, the DIB is pretty striking. I don't think I'd get tired of it.

Actually, I HAVE seen one in person, at the dealership (but 90% of it was under a white car cover). I still haven't seen one in the wild.

It's all about that DIB imo. The dark blues tend to be one of the rarest mustang colors on the road as well, usually only the premium colors end up rarer.

Out in the desert we have a lot of direct sunlight which really makes some of these colors POP and SPARKLE. On those rare days where it is overcast, those same colors vary in temperature and can lose their dazzle. They still look good, mind you, just in a different way. So anyway... Think about your lighting conditions where you live. If you're in an area that doesn't get much sun, but you love what a color looks like on a sunny day, you may only love the car a fraction of the time. So view the colors on a sunny day and cloudy day. If a cloudy day is hard to find, go check them out at the golden hour (shortly after sunset).

In the end I think they all look amazing. And they each take on different personalities... some more than others.

He posed an interesting question - "Why do you suppose that all car manufacturers paint their cars using basically the same 15 or 20 colors?"

The obvious answer would be "consumer preference", that they make cars in the colors that their customers want to buy - but that is only part of the answer. There is a concept in color theory called "metamerism". The technical details devolve pretty quickly into obscure color-geek talk, but the summary is that certain colors, depending on surface properties, colorants, and a host of other factors, appear different, under different light sources. The car manufacturers are effectively limited to colors which not only look good, but look the same - whether you are looking at it on their lot in full sunlight, on the lot at night under their sodium-vapor lights, in the showroom with fluorescent lighting, or in your garage with incandescent light.

Sometimes the differences in appearance can be dramatic. He showed us a swatch of fabric which was clearly an olive drab/dark green color -until you took it outside into sunlight where it was chocolate brown.

Of course, it is possible to have good metameric properties and still be an ugly color....

So, the summary is that all of the manufacturers are essentially using the same colors, and just slapping different names on them to distinguish themselves.

I think the guy was full of it as a goose (not unusual for consultants unfortunately, facts are boring, bs that the managers will buy into is where the real money is).
Lots of car colors appear different under different types of lighting. With the 15's, guard and magnetic seem to have been designed to maximize to the chameleon thing.

I was dead set on Guard but by the time I ordered my Ecoboost in July I went with MM...It is really a spectacular car in all lighting. I did see a Ruby Red at the local dealership and I have to say it would be my 1-A choice. But honestly photos don't do any of these colors justice, the car simply wears them all quite nicely.
