Town I live in the 70s tried using a DB meter to crack down on open headers on cars and pipes on bikes. They gave up after losing every case in court. If a semi went by or there was a building in the background, or they weren't the exact number of feet away or they weren't at the exact required angle or the humidity wasn't right, the decibels would vary.

At the "ring" the mustang guys hang supper traps off where the tips would be they use v band clamps to swap the tips to the super traps angled up. Then pull the extra mufflers after they are done.

Big stink about this in California years ago after a noise abatement measure was passed. Cops were supposed to be issued dB meters and pull over any bike (read: Harley) with straight pipes. Bikers, of course, raised bloody hell--'Loud pipes save lives' BS--but I never heard of anyone getting pulled over, much less charged. Hundreds of Hogs go by my place every day--it's on a main route to Yosemite, etc.--and every last one of them, I swear, has straight pipes. They go right by a CHP office by the corner of my property; the whole stretch of road is basically a drag strip.

Carroll said my Terlingua Racing Team Mustang "sounded beautiful" . What a great complement i thought ! Some of my neighbors hate me, oh well ! The tracks I been goin to never complained about noise even in CA.
