No more right to repair

This wasn’t included in a law voted on by US Congress, but instead was just something Biden through NHTSA has mandated. And just like that, automakers can be free to not share access to unique tools and information necessary to fix newer cars.

That's the second article I've seen and both fail to say if wired access (OBD II) will still be there. Often such things are omitted to make something seem worse than it it.

That is the question. I do know the OEM's have been wanting to not give any access to the car's computers, or that of any motorized equipment. Think farm tractors and such. I think this might allow them to lock everything.

I can’t blame them for not wanting people in there proprietary stuff. But that said, the aftermarket does a very good job of getting around it pretty quick. A good example is forscan. I have some newer kubota equipment and they have everything pretty much you need in the manual. We all know at this point when the arsehats on the hill get involved its never truly to our benefit.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the manufacturers make access to certified dealer shops only to prevent IP theft or compromise. Ford is investing a TON in IP R&D.

I hope there is a balance.

My car is out of warranty and I needed some stuff done. Simple stuff so I went to a 3rd party vs. the dealership. Normally I go to the dealership but it was more convenient to 3rd party it this time.

That brings up another point, will we end up with "throw away cars"? If the companies control everything and decide to put us on a 10 year cycle (similar to phones), that is great for them. Ford decides they don't want update their car.

On one side I agree with the oem's.
- The warranty it
- They get hit on the resale value and life span of the units from c/r and j.d. etc
Both subject to how the vehicle was serviced or repaired
- The EPA mess
On the other side I feel
- If you are ok with voiding the warranty and you own the vehicle, In that I mean you are holding the title, not a bank. Then have at it.
- After the model is 4 y/o the data should be open sourced.



The problem is those that want to be able to tinker with their vehicle and tune it, add power,etc. Are the first to go onto Social media and put the Brand on blast when they blew up the engine or drivetrain And the Brand won't warranty it.

Problem is many of these tinkered with units are not owned by the person holding the keys, A bank owns them . They get repo'd and are worthless value wise or the owner blew it up and the brand won't eat the repairs so the owner stops paying the note on it.
For every person that wants to tinker with their ride and when something fails, owns it and doesn't blame the brand or ask the brand to foot the cost to fix it, there are 10000 that won't. This is why the Banks, the OEm's and the EPA want it all locked down.
Less us forget that those ruling us hate the ice powered personal vehicle so killing the performance industry is job #1 for them.

Yes, at the moment. We all know it never ends. 5 years ago they called us conspiracy nuts when we said certain segments want to ban gas stoves......
