Overall, J.D. Power ratings are a joke. "How much ya wanna pay JD to make your product look The Best" is what it amounts to.

That said, ALL 5 Mustangs I've owned dating back to the '80's have been great. Flat Rock designs and builds a great car. Period.

Backup camera on my '20 is nfg, but there's a recall on it I haven't done yet. Other than that, great car.

Consider the price point these are Very good cars. Easy to have far more issues with more expensive performance cars. Ie merc bmw or even audi

Never, ever, ever, under any circumstances own a BMW out of warranty. Believe me, I speak from first hand experience. Need air in the tires? $2000. Need a shift knob? $2000. I am being silly, I know, but this is not far removed from the truth. Never had a more expensive car to fix.

hahahahahahaha... crying... so true. I bought a 2012 X5 for my ex-wife as part of our negotiated settlement, whoo-boy. Valve gasket replace $1200, breather hose replace, $1200, on to eventually she gave it back to me, bought a VW wagon of some type (with her settlement $'s). Oh the water pump was done in when I went to pick it up.... another $1400+. Sold it to a nice realtor couple. fast!

JD power funds the actual surveys and publishes them but then sells results to company's that want to use the data in their advertising. Naturally if your product does poorly you are not paying.
Consumer reports buys cars or rents cars to review and their survey results are from their subscribers who tend to be older and more conservative purchasers. They don't accept advertising money.
Having said this none of these surveys are about long term reliability or cost of ownership. That is the hardest data to come by so anecdotal is what you are left with (thinking kia/hyundai engine and trans failures not to mention having no immobilizer thefts- both highly rated by both JD and CR).

I love how everyone always compares it to an European car LOL.
Let's face it they are not even in the same ball park when it comes to fit, finish, quality etc.
I love my GT350 but it does not come close to either my R8 or my Macan in quality.

okay, okay just was sharing some good news about Mustangs on a Mustang forum but.. yeah EU higher end makes are going to be better. You mention an R8, Audi... looked that price up,

Starting MSRP of $142,700 for a 2021 R8 V10 Coupe RWD with automatic transmission.

even if yours is a 2015 it's still a few leagues past a Mustang GT and one fat wallet. This is apples to gold trimmed oranges here. I'm just pumping some sunshine for the Mustang here at mustang6g. No malice intended fwiw.

I'll grant you there's something suspect about a ratings company who's sole income is from doing reviews on products and getting clicks from us looking at them. Just generally though the collection of owner complaints or praise may say something.

I'm pretty sure Consumer Reports is the one rating company that can't be swayed by bribes or lobbying, or advertising money, and that's why American manufacturers hate them.

So, when they raised the Mustang's reliability rating to "average" that meant something to me, and played a part in why I have one now.

...And unlike my Evo, conversations with other owners don't involve the question of "So, how many engines have you gone through?"

I can agree with some of that.

J.D. Power is always cited as praising cars' "initial quality", which they define as how good the car was (how few defects showed up) for the first 30 days. If your engine block splits open on Day 31, J.D. Power doesn't want to know.

Consumer Reports sends surveys and reports reliability on cars up to 8 years old. (That's down from the previous 10 year threshold.) I've seen issues in the past where they had comparison of similar cars, and one of the things they compared was the cost of particular repair jobs.

P.S.: I was looking at Consumer Reports in 2019 to help someone decide on a car, and this was the first time I'd seen their reliability ratings for a Tesla. Maybe Tesla made high-quality cars early on. As of 2019, apparently you could expect less trouble from a 2011 Tesla than a brand-new one.
Elon Musk haaates them.

The 2020 Mustang is part of the current sixth generation to come out of the Mustang stable, and it's got a redesign from the previous S197 platform to the S550 platform. It’s got a reliability rating of 88 and an overall rating of 85 from J.D. Power. Considering that's very near the 'Best' category on J.D. Power, that is quite an achievement. Some may argue that the 2020 Mustang is the most reliable at the present time.

Of course that's my year!

Trust me, I am happy for you. I do believe the Mustang is relatively reliable and hopefully that will continue to be that way well into the future.

On the other hand, you shouldn't put all your full faith into JD Power... It is definitely a good recourse to look at but it is also a marketing company, so they tell you the things people pay them to tell you. This is coming from the same company that stated in Dodge and Land Rover rated best in initial quality. THESE companies? How long were those vehicles rated? Best initial quality in the first few weeks? That coupled with the record amount of recalls Ford has been issuing across the lineup ever since covid messed with their manufacturing... Mustang so far has been pretty good, but please take that report with a grain of salt.

Just make sure to do your own research on things. I am sure you have a good car though.
