If you get arrested and convicted for drunk driving, it should be mandatory jail time on the first conviction, with exponential increases after the first conviction. We have gotten numb to it in this country and somehow view it as 'not that big a deal', but it is absolutely absurd that we take it so lightly. Completely unacceptable, period.

As unfortunate as it is, I think the main reason is because of the lack of room than anything else. If they put everyone that got a DUII in jail, they'd have nowhere to put the 'true' criminals.

There are entirely too many drunk drivers on the roads still. I drive home late once a month from a volunteer meeting I have, and cars will do some pretty dumb things when you catch up to them. Like continue around a round-a-bout an extra time so you're not following them, or pull off the road to let you pass them. I'd not have been following them had they actually been driving the speed limit, but they drive 5 mph below the speed limit thinking that helps them not stand out.

Well, it is kind of like this analogy with drunk driving. If I touch a red hot stove and it does not burn my hand then maybe touching it isn't all that bad. I agree it cost a lot of money to house offenders but if the penalties were a little stiffer and enforced, it may deter the actions in the first place.

Again, glad that no serious injury occurred.

My friend, everything happens for a good reason. Who knows, maybe it was best for you not to have that car, which could have got you into another trouble. As long as you're grateful to God, He will take care you. Guaranteed!

If you have another car to drive, save up for GT350. I hope I have the money by then to get one.
can we stop all this god stuff? leave that for other forums, doesn't belong here.

how about some credit to the wonderful engineers who designed the safety systems?

or the people/machines who built the car?

Did it autocall 911 for you?
Let me answer this question...No I didn't have 911 activated as I was concerned about privacy, etc. Now this was a busy roadway so many people called 911. If you travel rural roads may be something to think about activating. What the car does do is turn the interior lights on, the hazard lights on, and sounds the horn like the alarm went off to locate you incase you end up offroad. Very good safety features.

WOW. I just watched your video... you ended up upside down? Damn, that's amazing that you weren't seriously hurt. Yet another reason to stay away from convertibles...

GT,
I watched the video and have to agree with others about being lucky you weren't hurt. I know you said it was at highway speed, but how did it happen? I mean did you see it coming or was it a complete surprise? When I was hit in my accident, I never saw it coming. I think I faired better, not having the chance to tense up. I hope the other driver was caught?

Good lord.....The other driver must have hit you VERY hard for that car to flip. Credit goes to modern vehicle building and safety systems. Glad you're okay.

The thing with DUI in almost every state is that it is treated like every other misdemeanor, because its written in the statutes as that...a misdemeanor. Most convicted of DUI will never see jail time because as a misdemeanor you can only serve less than a year in jail, as opposed to more than a year for felonies. (at least thats how it is here in HI). Thats why most states impose other penalties (such as ignition interlock, AA meetings, etc) to make the punishment more "severe." I agree that the DUI consequences must be a lot stricter, but the only time someone convicted of DUI will see hard jail time and harsher punishment is when it gets into the felony range (usually it'll be a few DUI's within a 5 year period or when they get into an accident and kills the other driver, in which case its treated as negligent homicide. Here in HI its a misdemeanor (stupid, i know) and more than likely the convicted individual won't see jail time, just probation, depending on their record. Don't know what its like for other states.

GT,

I am glad you were able to walk away from this, but I am sorry about your car. I hope everything works out for you in terms of insurance/legal issues and that you don't have any long term medical issues associated with your crash. I am just glad your car held up as well as it did. Looks like the safety systems did what they were supposed to do.

While I consider myself a Christian, i am not much of a religious person but you should just let people speak their mind and say their condolences and well wishes, the way they want to say them.

It is very easy to stop reading if you find it annoying. Skip that person's message and continue on to the next. Simple.

Anyhow GT, I am glad you walked away from that it is a true testament to how safe these cars are.

As for the DUI talk, I agree the penalties should be stiffer, however I don't necessarily agree it should be a felony if no other harm was done. Or at least have a separate blood alcohol content requirement for it becoming a felony. I just believe we can make the system work better and deter people from drkn &drvn without labeling someone a felon. We are human, and we all make mistakes. Some just make bigger mistakes than others

An accident as severe as this, I hope the penalties are really stiff. It should not only be dui and while I'm no lawyer and my knowledge of how severe some charges are lacking. However maybe add in charges of reckless endangerment, and if there's a such a charge for damaging more than X thousands of dollars with if property add that in there.
