Hello All

I originally posted this in the "Convertible" section as they have noisier interiors than hardtops. However, I figured that it would benefit hardtop owners too. The sound tube that is connected through the Helmholtz resonator “picks up specific sounds” from the air being fed through the air intake system tube to the MAF (mass airflow sensor) and emphasizes them. The sound tube adds an engine acceleration sound when the throttle is opened.

This physical fact was described by Professor Helmholtz in his 1862 book, “On the Sensations of Tone”.

Between the road noise, the new high-flow air cleaner (still in the OEM housing) and the sound tube, I was losing the sound of the exhaust…which I want to hear!
BTW…before I describe my modification, note the picture of the 2 Helmholtz chambers; the larger one is from a 2015-17 GT, the smaller one from the 2018+ version. Perhaps Ford decided to scale back the sound and its ugly appearance?

I obtained an extra hose that leads into the Helmholtz resonator, bought a #4 rubber plug from the Ace Hardware Store, cut off the fatter end to fit into the hose, and filed it as needed. Then I lock open the large clamp, slipped in the plug into where the hose narrows, and superglued it so it would not get sucked out and wind up in the MAF.

Yes, I have lost much of the engine noise but now, the H-piped exhaust tone comes through clearer while the interior is quieter. BTW…this works equally well for GT coupes.

Thanks for looking.

I yanked mine off after I got the car home from the dealer. I don’t think there’d be any scenario where they void a warranty for capping off and removing the sound tube.

TexasMetallic5.0:

That is good news!

BTW...I do have an extra hose (the one that connects the air intake to the helmholtz) off of a 2019-2021 GT if someone else needs it.

Thanks

As difficult as that stupid thing is to see, much less remove. I seriously have my doubts that any dealer even the biggest prick. Would pop the hood and go warranty is void no sound tube. LMAO
That's tricky but I think it is beyond necessary, for one to have any concerns.

The changes to the suspension would be more likely to affect the warranty (they do not) than something like a sound tube.

Think about it?

I did a similar, but slightly different method :

The sound tube got silenced today, but no test drive yet so don’t ask how much of a difference it made ... lol

I plugged mine in a slightly different way to the normal ‘rip it out’ method as I wanted to keep the OE look :

Everything went back together and it looks completely ‘normal’ :like:

I followed that up by fitting a AEM dry filter and I took the opportunity to remove the carbon trap at the same time :

I actually made the identical changes! No carbon trap and the same air filter. No horsepower increase but perhaps a little better acceleration off the line. The filter was worth the $60 over the Ford OEM paper one.

The only time to use the rip it out/off methodology is for potato chips.

That nut took almost as much time to remove as did the complete CIA install.

LMAO: one of those walk the walk challenges, working with tools brings about.

I'm not sure I agree with the OP's description of the purpose of this. It's to reduce sound, not to increase intake sound. No idea where that idea came from, but I don't know any basis for this. These have always been known as intake silencers.

This tube pipes filtered / tuned sound into the cabin.

The intake silencer is the butt plug shaped thing hanging below the intake elbow, I believe that reduces some nasty resonances :like:
