I had a vortech installed. I got the stage 2 with the smaller pulley. Cause of that I was told by the shop who installed it that I need to put in a bottle of vp octane booster every time I fill up. It says it adds 7 octane to 10 gal of gas. I was curious if I’m able to put in a gal or 2 of e85 instead of the vp octane booster. I can’t use just e85 as I’m not tuned for it. If I want to start using e85 I have to get a fore fuel system. I just figured the e85 would give me a octane boost just like the vp octane booster.

Umm I would follow the installer/tuners direction exactly.

I'm certainly no gas expert but I imagine the properties of octane booster and e85 are quite different so I wouldn't risk it. Instead of asking us ask your tuner. They'll know best for your car.

A good example why best to return to the tuner and discuss...

When I was still lurking here, someone had started a thread of a dyno pull and their car that did not go well. New car, new mods, something like that. The tuner made assumptions of the fuel used. The owner did not know of any specific requirements, or, thought maybe what he'd been using was OK. A handful of dyno pulls later, the engine grenaded.

It was later confirmed the wrong fuel was used and was at least one factor which led to the damage.

An extreme example, I know, but why best to have a sit-down and discuss.

Yes your right. I’d never do it until I spoke to Lund. I just didn’t want to bug them with a stupid question.

Do like they did in the old days and run some true shine (105 oct) and you'll be golden .

93 e10 + 7 = 100 octane
91 e10 + 7 = 98 octane
E85 is 100 octane

adding 2 gallons of e85 to 10 gals of 93 e10 will get you 94.5 octane and 25% ethanol.

I thought e85 was 105 octane. But if that’s true then using e85 as a octane booster doesn’t make sense.

You don't really see much octane benefit until E30+. Your STFT's would be near the 25% limit. Use Boostane/Torco/VP to get your desired octane. Log, and review STFT's, knock, and Spark advance.
