that goes along with every other NJ law the rest of the country doesn't have. Not going to lie, not getting out to pump it when its freezing out is nice.

it was a close race and I thought we had a chance with Jack but the ppl said Murphy and now we get to enjoy another few years of more increased taxes and more expensive gas..... at least we don't have to pump it ;)

I always use 91 (highest octane rate here in California) on my GT. I did the same with my EcoBoost.
Typically, the difference between grades is 10 cents / gallon. With a little bit of math:

Filling a 14.5 gallon tank with:
*87: 4.70*14.5 = $68.15
*89: 4.80*14.5 = $ 69.60
*91: 4.90*14.5 = $71.05

So, you are saving $2.90 per tank. Is it really worth it? To me, it's not. Even if the difference between grades would be 20 cents you are saving $3.80 per tank.
Sometimes the only thing we "care" is the price per gallon, but when you do the math you realize that there is not that much difference between the lowest and the highest grade.

wow your prices are crazy. but at least from 87 to 91 is only a bit of a jump. we are currently like a 40 cent jump to each. yeah i’m considering 91

I agree with you 100%. I use Shell so with the Fuel Rewards I get from T-Mobile every Tuesday the prices drop by $.15

So it would be of course $4.75 for the 91. Not really a dent at all but I will take it.

Then every few tanks I put in Octanium so I can have some real fun for a week.

By the way how is escalating gas sales tax Christie but into effect 5 years ago doing? You know the one with automatic increases if a certain revenue level isn’t obtained. Another reason not to miss NJ.

I used to frequent New Jersey a lot a couple of years ago. The Gas prices were cheaper there than in Georgia. Now it appears that the prices between both states are very similar.

Damn what a gem of a thread! This is right up there with the "don't let your car idle because it's bad" also the "prime your oil pump before you start it because it's been sitting for winter " 😂😂😂😂

lol. but the taxes are too damn high
No joke, the taxes are sickening here for what you get. I cant complain where i am at but I know ppl that pay over 20k a year in property taxes.

yes! Those tax hikes keeps good ol NJ in the lead for gas prices across the country! That and the keep charging more fees for toll roads... its gotta be going to someones pockets!??!?!...christie!? lol

People don't think like you. (us). If gas was .50 less a gallon across the street, they'd spend 4 hours in line to save $5.

And look at those California prices we pay just so we can subsidize our governors lifestyle. Even e85 is up to almost $4 gallon.

Nothing wrong with that… I would not even spend 15 minutes waiting in line to get .50c off a gallon, my time is worth much more than 5 bucks.
But I get it, we are all different and everyone’s financial situation is different too.

Would I buy a 55K performance vehicle and put the cheapest gas or wait hours just to save a few bucks ? NO.

If someone is concerned about saving $4 a tank (let’s say $10-12 a month), this person should not be pursuing a performance vehicle, not to mention a V8.
I don’t know, that’s just me.

Is there some DIY way to do that? I'm guessing you didn't test a sample for research octane and motor octane and average them.

No there is no DIY like ethanol content. Back in my E46 M3 days we had a guy in our group who worked for Chevron and he told us that Cali 91 really tests out to 92. I didn't do the test...sorry should have explained that.

Hello; I get your point entirely. I did not buy a Mazda Miata or a Subaru BRZ because they both require the higher octane fuel. Ford sets the standard for it's products and allows the use of 87 octane. It does not even recommend the use of 91 or 93 octane.
Recommend is the next level below require. If I bought a vehicle that recommended 93 octane, I would use it.

I saw some years ago where the Mercedes Smart car required high octane fuel. That puzzled me. A car whose MPG's is touted in ad's requires high test fuel.
I get why the Miata and the BRZ require high test fuel. They are small sporty cars and the engineers can tweak out a bit more power that way. The last Miatas able to run on regular were the 2000 year models.

For me the ability to run 87 octane in a Mustang GT is a selling point. Same for a place in the trunk to fit an actual spare tire. Small things in some ways, but things that make a difference, at least to me.
