Car started losing coolant along with puffing a white sweet, white smoke. Pulled the spark plugs in my 2018 mustang Ecoboost and found coolant in cyl 3. Brought into dealer and they want 11k for new motor. I was thinking it could be just the head gasket? 62k miles

Call Ford Corp 800# and explain that you just came across this issue and had just recently breached the 5/60 Powertrain Warranty. Ask if they will offer any assistance to helping with the repair. Some folks have had luck getting a reduction in large repairs when slightly past their warranty provisions.

Outside of that and being past 60k, there's not much more I can offer for advice.

If you're a DIYer, you could source a low mileage engine from a salvage facility to save half of that cost and do the swap yourself - or buy a new one from Ford or Ford Performance. There's a few threads on here with EB folks who have done it.

What was the determining factor in the need for a new engine, vs. a head gasket replacement?

I would take it to an independent shop if calling Ford corporate doesn't get any results.

Build it better and stronger than the factory engine (if you race or drive it hard). If not, a low mileage swap would be the cheapest route.

This is what I was wondering. Car drives fine when warmed up. Don’t have the money to drop 11k for new motor
