Tom: Interesting question, could it have a VIN if there was no vehicle associated?

I also wonder how far the "VIN rule" goes in terms of "big parts?" I know the auctions always talk about "numbers matching" but I've never read or been told just what numbers those are and where.

Is the VIN stamped on the block or is it blank like they do it on the GT350 engine replacements?
I did not see any vin stamped into the block whatsoever.

There is a blank plate that is machined smooth where the VIN goes. It probably is blank, but would be a huge bonus if they transferred your VIN to the new block.

Don’t 100% take my word for it, I’m by no means an expert. Most major parts such as engine, transmission and rear end were date stamped not vin stamped. If you had a restoration project and wanted to keep “original” you’d need to find a block that was date stamped to match proximities of cars manufactured date. So if you had a 1970 Mach1 built in April of 70 your block would carry a date stamp of say may/April. If your block was date stamped June or after you would know engine wasn’t original to car. I hope that makes sense?

@Tomster , as I said in one post, I’m not ever sure if the new supercharger will carry over an engine builder plaque? Maybe the cover gets transferred? I’m just not sure, that’s what I want to find out tomorrow before it get here. I’ll ask about vin transfer too.

Let me see if I can find a photo of the VIN location on the block. Its on the bottom side somewhere. Hold on....

Edited to add: I cant find the photo I took, but I believe it is on the left side of the block, lower portion. Most likely your replacement engine's stamp plate is blank.

PERFECT sense, JW...many thanks. I always wondered and now I know.

But here's my second question for "the mob..."

Which parts get VIN stamped besides the obvious one?
The chassis, the engine block, and the transmission. I have heard differential, but I have never seen that stamp. I believe the last 8 of the VIN are what is stamped. (actually it looks like dot matrix)
