Whoever heard an OIL FILTER being loose causes noises? And getting two wheel alignments without checking wheel bearing noise or runout by merely shaking the wheel assembly? This is one dealer that would never see me again.
Yeah that’s why I’m not going to that dealership again but I had to get the bearing replaced it was pretty bad. The alignments that I did were done at a tire shop which the mechanic I’ve known for 10 years told me to get done. He didn’t have the machine to do it himself. The second alignment I had done before the wheel bearing replacement, mechanic told me to get. I didn’t know any better so I did. He had always worked on my other car before and my father’s car, and I never had problems with it. But then again it’s a VW and he’s used to doing none American cars.

Agreed and I can understand you going to him. All I was implying is that a quality shop will check tires, ball joints, and wheel runout BEFORE wasting time doing an alignment. I've been around a long time and around a lot of garages you only need a few minutes to see who knows what they are doing. I fear the days of true customer service are over.

Definitely. It’s hard to trust people now a days, let alone professionals. I’ll figure it all out.

Thank you all for your input.

Not saying it’s a big project, it’s just not one I care to do anymore. BTW, I grew up in a Gulf Service station and was doing oil and filter changes when I was 8 years old. My Dad was a Gulf dealer for 30 years.

Do you have any of the old equipment or merchandise? Great pic.

Sadly no. My Dad did have a lot of items saved in a storage building but after he died in 1994 my Mom threw most of it away. When my Mom died 6 months later, my brother, who was living next door, got rid of the rest. I unfortunately was living 100 miles away and other than a few pictures I have nothing from those old service stations except lots of fond memories.

How would you document "completed maintenance work" done by an independent shop if not via receipts and possibly the shop's own bookkeeping?
