Hi Chaps/Chapesses,

Has anybody run wires from the battery back to the boot?

I want to put some wires in so that I can hook up a trickle charger in the boot. Once the car is in the garage there's not a lot of room to get around the front and lift the bonnet. I'd rather go in nose first than reverse in.

I'm planning to remove the sound tube from the bulkhead and thought, with a suitable grommet, that would be a nice way into the interior. Then try and fish the wires under the carpets into the boot.

I did similar with the XKR but the battery was in the boot already. So that was a piece of pish, as we say locally.

Any thoughts/alternatives welcomed.

Cheers

just cut the soundtube and leave it and its grommet already going through bulkhead thread wires down it :)

its pretty easy to get the wires under the passenger side but you'll probably need to just pop the passenger seat out to be able to lift the carpet enough to get them through.

Do you really need the trickle charger, I have seen some that you can plug into the fag lighter not sure how good they are, running wires would be my last option.
Some have fitted a plug connector into front grill then plugged charger into there it would only need you to be able to reach around from side of car if you can not actually get around front.

Nice one Hinch. At first I thought, good idea might be a problem cutting the tube down behind the engine though. Then the lightbulb came on, cut it at the top of the engine after the cone section. Right at the battery and routes itself into the car. I'm guessing that's what you meant all along.

Anybody know if the tube is unobstructed after the conical bit?

Symone, I think the fag lighter is switched and only remains live for around 10 mins or so.

I have actually fitted a plug connector at the front, comes up by the windscreen wiper on the passenger side. I'm scared of knocking stuff onto the bonnet from the shelves as I don't have much more than a couple of inches room to work with.

I think running wires is a bit safer than frying the cars wiring.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

yeah cut it near the battery its clear after that stupid quick release cone thing so just cut it and that way it keeps the wires hidden.

Many of those don't have a "hot" connection anymore. It's switched.

I fitted by trickle charger connector under the front scuttle - it hides under the rear of the bonnet below the wipers with a black rubber cover so it is waterproof and disguised. Pokes out from the back of the battery cover.

That's how I did the one at the front.

Having second thoughts about running down the sound tube. If it comes through the bulkhead where I think it does, there's a white plastic gadgy in the way. So I'll probably remove and plug that in the normal way.

I've seen one of our Murican buddies on U Tube has removed the battery box and drilled through the bulkhead there. Comes out behind the flap in the carpet at the back of the glove box. Seems quite neat. I'll investigate a bit more.

I would do it exactly like this. There's a decent size opening through the engine bay sheetmetal under the battery, pop out the passenger fender liner and you can see a fairly large grommet with a harness passing through it. Cut your own opening up to the side of the main harness and route it that way. You should be able to just pull the plastic on the door jamb and front lower kick panel to route it backwards and then tuck it under the rear quarter plastics. From there you have your choice of where you want to run the post for the battery. As far as the ground, I'd just put a post next to the battery one and tie it into your choice of large bolts back there.

Hi Bryan,

I know where you mean but I think it's a bit easier for you guys with LHD. That grommet is on the wrong side, I think, for the RHD cars. If the layout is the same on the RHD then behind the battery box seems a good place to me. Also less likely to come into contact with any moisture. Then do exactly as you say under the door jambs etc.

I'll investigate more in a week or so as it will be away shortly to the body shop to get the rear end fixed. Some pillock reversed it into a wrought iron gate post.

Cheers
