engines are assembled in canada, components arrive from different subcontractors, intermidiately stored, go through their assembly lines.

components should be covered with some lube or wax or dry (powders?). this will protect them during storage/transportation, this will also prevent dry contact during assembly.

So all this conservation stuff gets dissolved and contained in factory oil.

This would also be true for those who get new engines replaced by dealers.

I am not mechanical engineer, so this is theory.

But first oil change should get all those lubes/waxes/whatever out.

Does that help with engine bbq tick / typewriter / knock ?

Can this be mysterious oil factory additive?

If that's the case, then why did my tick start at 800 miles. Others started even earlier, or right out of the showroom. Others started after their first oil change. Some even started at 10,000 miles after a couple oil changes.

I suppose it's possible that assembly fluids may have an affect of some sort, but I doubt it.

2011-2017 you hear most of stories that are associated with the first oil change.

A lot of 2018 plus have it right at the dealers sales lots.

Maybe we should be distinguishing these gens.

Having said that, my late 2017 had it before the first oil change. I did not associate it with the engine initially though, but remember hearing ticking with windows down. I was checking if my wheels and hubs were properly torqued.

All this factory pre mix might be undetectable in oil analysis labs as they check for very particular chemicals, and what we are looking for might be under the radar.

As far as pre and post 2018, - imagine air bubble theory is right - with 2018+ having higher compression ratio they might be hitting those bubbles harder.

Just thinking out loud here - Do you know the build date of your 2017? Mine was March 9, 2017 according to the window sticker.. fairly late as well. My tick didn't start until after first oil change. I read in a number of places that the XL-17 additive that Ford was supposedly using to silence the tick since 2011/2012 was discontinued in early 2017 ... Perhaps it isn't the pre-assembly protective coating on the parts, but maybe they were adding XL-17 to the factory fill... now that it has been discontinued, this could be why we have all of these 5.0's ticking right off the lot.

Of course, this is a total conspiracy theory (don your tin foil hat), but it really wouldn't surprise me with Ford's business practices lately. I sure as heck know that if I had of heard the tick when I was buying my 2017, I would have immediately backed out of the deal.

I'm so tired of browsing info on all this thing...

But there are threads on oil analysis of factory oil at another forum, and they are not exposing anything unusual. But then again, oil analysis is looking for zync, iron, moly, etc. Materials that are used during engine manufacturing/assembly might not show up in those reports.

If I noticed my tick during the purchase I'd not buy the car for sure. But I did not have tick in mind. It was hot weather, windows up and ac on.

I do not remember build date of mine without searching for papers, but mine was fairly late. 2018 was soon to manufacture and it was already not easy to find 2017 configuration I needed at lots.

my car had like 8 miles at odometer.
