Page 125 in my manual

"2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 Engines
We recommend regular unleaded gasoline
with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some stations offer fuels posted as regular
with an octane rating below 87, particularly
in high altitude areas. We do not
recommend fuels with an octane rating
below 87.
To provide improved performance, we
recommend premium fuel for severe duty
usage, such as trailer tow."

this everything the manual said about octane

Dyno numbers are pointless. Would they embellish about making max torque on 93 oct? I think not. They would have to claim max torque on 87 oct to embellish. Bottom line, if the stock tune can add more power, 93 oct will let it find it. 87 oct may find it as well, but not for long.

The answer is yes, our cars will make more power on higher octane fuels. However, normally aspirated motors reach a point where too much timing can actually hurt power. So you may not see a big difference between 104 octane and 93. The control strategy was known as adaptive spark control and it's been around at least since the first gen coyote. 2018's are probably even more advanced in their tunes. Quote below taken from this article. https://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/deep-dive-fords-all-new-5-0-v8/

"Even without using direct injection, Ford was still able to achieve an impressive 11:1 compression ratio while allowing the engine to still run on regular gas. According to Harrison, a lot of effort was expended on the engine management system. The adaptive spark control system keeps the engine running right on the knock sensor all the time, continuously adjusting the spark advance to avoid detonation regardless of the fuel used. The control system has a high bandwidth air-fuel control algorithm to make sure that it's both responsive and efficient. The 5.0 has also benefited from work done on the Fusion Hybrid by incorporating aggressive deceleration fuel shut-off. Whenever the throttle is released, fuel flow is shut off completely to improve efficiency."

When I did my Cobb tune, I used the program for 93 octane. I would never use anything less than 93. The low end torque was so nice to have. Most of the time I would never have to downshift when passing somebody. It's not that much more to pay for 93. If you cannot afford 93 octane for your Mustang, then I would recommend owning a different type of car. High performance isn't free. I knew that going in when I bought my Ecoboost Mustang. :headbang:

...or if you live in a state where 93 is not available, e.g., CA...

That's not true. California has 93 all over.

If I lived in an area that didn't have 93, I would not own a Mustang and would have bought something different.

Believe it or not, there are other places in the world beyond CA. Really.

Exactly. That's why I don't want to live in CA. Too expensive. Too many issues. Much better places to live elsewhere. I know lots of people are fleeing CA, but NOT ENOUGH are. More people need to flee.

FWIW, there are places in the USA that do not offer 93 octane. One of these is Elkhart Lake, WI, home of Road America. There is one gas station in town, and all it has is 91. Yes, at the track you can get 98 and 104, i.e., blend a little in to get to 93, or whatever you want. But again, there are places where 93 is not readily available.

When I am not happy with my nearby resources, I normally move. If I lived in Elkhart and wanted to drive a fast car, I'd move to a place that had 93.

I think you're missing the point here. Elkhart Lake is where Road America is. If you want to drive a car fast, and you live anywhere in the world, you want to come to Elkhart Lake. It's one of the favorite places on earth for professional race car drivers. I'm guessing you're not familiar with this. Google it. Awesome place.

Thanks, but that's on the other side of the country from me right now. Usually I just open it up on the Florida Turnpike and you can hit 180 MPH on some good stretches there.
