Good morning all.

Problem:

Very, very cloud click/ping coming from drivers side axle area. Happens when 'changing attitude' in the car (if that makes sense), i.e. when pulling away, when going from fwd to rwd and vice versa... but also when already on the move and you suddenly give a burst of gas.

Happens about 7/10 times pulling away in the car... so not always. It seems to be getting worse. Sometimes you even get a bit of a double click. Every now and again it almost sounds like its something relieving tension, but not always.

Weve narrowed it down to coming from the drivers side axle area.

Background:

Both wheel bearings were replaced about a month ago due to failure.
Car is running on Roush V1 coilovers. I also have BMR lockout cradles.

Ruled out:

The car was on a lift at a shop yesterday. Bearings seem good, i.e. no play at all.

Main hub nuts are TIGHT!

Wheels are torqued correctly (150 lbft)

Im wondering if it could be the UJ/CV joint? The noise has only appeared since replacing the bearing(s).

Could the bearing failure have caused subsequent damage to the UJ/CV?

Ill try to grab a video today.

sounds almost like something hitting the backing plate for the brakes. check the caliper is tight and the pads have their shims in place. I would take off the caliper and look very closely at the brake pads and the anti rattle clips.

CV joint....same noise here. Replaced both half axles and the noise is gone. Others have reported the same issue and resolution.

The 3 suggestions I have had so far are:

- Loose bolt somewhere on the rear end
- Brake pads loose
- CV joints

1&2 are easy to check and cheap to fix, so thats where im starting. Going to have the brakes checked and every bolt on the rear end checked next week.

If that doesnt cure it, time to start looking at axles I suppose.

Right. Had the car on a lift today and checked every bolt on the rear end. Managed to get a 1/4 turn on one of the ARB links, but that's it.

Ping is still as loud as ever.

Ran out of time to check the brakes, so going back on Monday. Interestingly we discovered that if I drive the car with the handbrake applied, it still makes the noise from time to time, but it is much, much reduced.

So brakes on Monday, and if no joy I'm looking at new driveshafts.

Latest update.

Went in yesterday and had the rear brakes stripped, cleaned, greased and re-assembled. Everything was and still is as it should be.

No difference. LOL!

So brakes checked and every bolt on the rear end checked.

Next we are going to swap the new bearings left to right, to see if the sound moves with it.

Obviously if it does, we know its a faulty new bearing and can get a new one on guarantee. If the sounds stays the same we can rule them out.

I guess my next course of action would be then be axles, as this would rule out the UJ and dry splines etc all in one go.

Under warranty? Or are you diagnosing yourself?

Myself.

They flat out refused to replace the bearings under warranty as the car was sporting aftermarket wheels and 305 tyres (only been on there a week, but was a good enough excuse for them).

Not even wasting my time taking this to the dealer.

That's unfortunate. Can you try a different dealer or is that not even an option as I imagine Ford dealers are scarce in the Netherlands?

You could jack the car up and grab the wheel and see if there is any side to side movement indicating a bearing issue. But I am quite positive swapping hubs/bearings will be a waste of your time. I could play 3 videos that I know of and they all sound exactly as yours....all CV joints remedied by half axle replacement mine included.

Nothing that you have done from what I can tell modification wise contributed to the failure...it is a known issue on these cars.

Thanks.

There's enough Ford dealers around, but warranty is handled centrally.... So if one refuses the work there's no point going elsewhere.

I think ultimately it will be a half shaft thing too, but the bearing swap is a $50 potential solution that I think is worth trying first.

Thanks for the input :)

(Ps. Don't suppose those vids you mention are on YT?)

I finally went and ordered a new set of bolts from my local Ford dealer.

Part number:

They look quite different to the parts that came off:

Top (new), bottom (old)

The new ones dont have the retained washer of the old ones.

Now torqued up to the BMR specs with Loctite. Problem is gone! (205Nm + 45 degrees)

Now to see if it comes back.

Anyone know why the design has changed so radically on the bolts?
