I tried changing the bit in the BCM that tells it what type of bulbs they are to the 2018 value. Ours is a 0 2018 is a 1. Did not work.

The high beams should operate the same way though. All it does is raise the electric cutoff in both types, right?
I don't have the digital dash unit, but I do have a 2018 if you need to look at something in my car.

I think this post holds a bit of info that got overlooked...

When the low beams are on and the BCM receives a request for high beams, the High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs remains powered on and the shutter within each headlamp are activated. This changes the headlamp beam pattern to illuminate a greater distance.
The HID only has one bulb/setting with a mechanical change for high beams. I'd imagine the LEDs change current.

There is also the possibility that the 2018 method/CAN messages didn't exist in the 2015-2017 programming... and the modules use a different firmware. You can change a bit, but if the programming isn't there to interpret that bit... you will not get desired results.

I disagree. I think the LEDs do not change the amount of current to the bulb. They must have a mechanical shutter too. Unless there are TWO LED bulbs at different positions in the headlight (probably not). I'm betting its a mechanical shutter. I could be wrong though.

Can someone with a 2018 confirm? Reverend when you hit your flash to pass can you hear the clunking of the shutter moving up when you engage and down when you release?

My reasoning is because if they just got brighter the light beam would still be horrible and all over the place and blind people either way - on both the low and high setting. Now its possible it gets brighter AND the shutter opens but I still think only the shutter opens.

zackmd1 can you possibly get the high beam operation snippet out of the 2018 shop manual?

I don't think so, but I'll try to verify today.

Please try. If you can have someone put their head really close to the headlight to listen for the shutter. I'm not sure how else it would work if it doesn't use a shutter... Besides having a second LED(s) to change where the output light is going.

Does anyone have access to 2018 wiring diagrams? I'll look and see if my dealer has the book in their bookcase the next time I'm there. They have 2017 but that won't help. They let me borrow them.

The one piece of the puzzle that doesn't make sense here is the fact that flash to pass works correctly its only the high beams that does not. Why could that be? Whats different between FTP and high beams? Only the fact that they stay on until you pull the stalk back again. This is such a headache.

breeves002 - It is a shutter. You can see and hear it when the high beams are activated. You're welcome to check it out in person if you need to poke around at anything.

Oh right you're here in STL! I will definitely take you up on that offer if I need to look at anything.

I guessed it was a shutter. I just need access to wiring diagrams for now. I'm hoping to get that this week if my dealer has the book.

So I found out the bus pirate doesn't support CAN frames so I may buy the CAN application for our scope ($150 on eBay used) so I can just hook the scope up and have it decode each CAN frame for me. This will allow me to see what the message being sent is and how it differs on a 2018 versus 2016. It also offers future CAN message deciphering should anyone need it...

Here's what a CAN message looks like on the scope:

Still waiting on my digital cluster to ship.. boo..

Order it last Wednesday the 21st and it still says "processing" on Tasca's website. Order the bezel on Tuesday the 20th and it says "ready to ship", but no tracking number.

So my understand is the high beams will not stay on when you replace the SCCM and do the programming? Works with the 15-17 SCCM, but bunch other stuff willn't function correctly with the SCCM.

I really do appreciate the work being put into this swap by all the members.. hopefully it gets figured out.. as alot of this is over my head on how it works.. lol

If I hold the lever in on my high beams, they will stay on either way I do the lever, they don't just Flash and go off

Tasca only ships items together as one unit so if you want them to ship separately you have to cancel the back ordered items. They probably already have your cluster and bezel in but won't ship until the SCCM and buttons come in.

P6CL is correct - flash to pass works fine and they'll stay on as long as you hold the MFS in or out they just will not stay on if you press it out once and release like they are supposed to do.

Here's what a CAN message looks like on the scope:
I am not a CAN specialist, but sniffing with a scope gets you to a very low level.
Wouldn't a CAN to USB device along with some sniffing software do the same job? (~ 35 USD)
https://www.antratek.de/usb-can-v7-00-analyzer?gclid=Cj0KCQiAw9nUBRCTARIsAG11eie_AKU9-pDABQ1o8ijwWZc6bdgtXmIcW7eNCJmbQ97FwIBJr63C4LEaAooLEALw_wcB
There also seems to be a more professional device from a german company with a sophisticated sniffing SW.

This would be even more expensive than your scope add-on, but eventually the SW is more capable. (~200USD)

There is even a CAN-sniffing project for the raspberryPI

The inexpensive analyzer is a very good idea. The scope add on should do the same thing the inexpensive one would do. It will put the data format in a spreadsheet in the same way that software does. The can-usb device is less expensive though.

I'm going to see if I can get the scope to at least READ CAN stuff without the add-on. It may not let me save it to a spreadsheet or do anything with the data but hopefully I can at least read it.

Thanks for the input!
