Anybody run summer tires during winter (no snow)?

Anybody doing that here without issue? If so, what are you running?

I've been trying to get A/S tires in the sizes I want since frickin August and have been getting no luck. Thinking of just dealing with summers through the winter. It gets to freezing temps where I am but I won't be driving in snow. I don't have the option to keep a separate set of winter wheels / tires.

I drive the stock (for PP cars) Pirelli P zeros year round without issue, but I'm in Houston. It might get to 30 once or twice a year, and only during night/early morning. I think you're not supposed to use under 45 deg F though. You definitely have to be more careful, especially if wet too. But it's no big deal just don't be reckless. Freezing temps you'll really be pushing it. And yeah absolutely no ice or snow

my first winter in my old 2011 on a day it dropped below freezing, the tires just wouldn't stick and i looped the car doing a slow left turn in an intersection. when spring and summer came, i noticed that the tires had lost their grip, and it was explained to me that exposing performance summer tires to freezing temps ruins the compound, so i had to replace them and get a second set of dedicated winters.

Don't do it. There is a reason they are called summer only tires.

Just get another set of wheels with winter tires and swap them between seasons. Best way to get the most life out of your tires and get the best traction all year round.

Depending on the summer tires.
Some are more tolerable than the others.
If you are careful with the right foot, you shouldn't have any issues.

where are you in the east coast? I'm in GA, and run summers year round. I can WFH if needed, and our winters are extremely mild with the number of days below 40 (besides the early morning) i can count on one or two hands. I've never had any issues. If there's ever ice or snow (all 1/4" of it) on the road I just stay home.

If it's 40 or below in the morning I just take it easy and there's no problem.

I'm in Northern Virginia - you never know each year how bad it's going to be. Some years we get nothing but two years ago we got a huge snow storm. I can WFH as well so that won't be a problem. But, when there's no snow on the ground I'll have to commute. January through March there can be a more than a few days with freezing temps.

I ran the stock Pirelli Summer tires that came on my factory 20" wheels last winter, but never in snow. You really have to be careful, especially with hard braking or in rain. I now run Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ and plan to use them year round. They handle the cold well and are supposed to be really good in the warmer temps as well. I wanted a performance tire that I could run all year and these worked out perfectly.

Yea those are really nice tires and not cheap. I'm going to be considering the same ones if the BF Comp 2's I'm waiting on don't come in within two weeks. Unfortunately, I will also have to consider going down in rim size to 19" as that's where most of the tire size choices are.

I have been running the stock Pirellis (Summer tires) as well for awhile in below 40 degree weather (temperatures ranging from 15s all the way up to 60s) and I can tell you these tires suck in the cold mornings. I look like a hockey puck taking the first 5-10 turns, fishtailing or spinning the tires until they warm up and even then, I can still feel the tires wanting to drift. I would definitely not push them much when temperatures are below 40 degrees.

My advice is to either get All season tires (since you don't get snow) for the cold weather and stick with the Pirellis for the Summer.

I am, personally, fitting new Michelin Winter tires today since I can't have those Summer tires here in MN during the Winter.

+1 I run the same thing year round. They are very expensive. I'll see how long they last this go around and go from there.
