Oil consumption - Smoking exhaust

Anyone else had problems with excessive oil consumption and clouds of smoke out the exhaust ?

My 2016 GT with 15,000 miles is burning 3/4 to 1 qrt of oil per 1,000 miles. Smokes out tail pipes about every 5th cold start, sometimes worse than others, and sometimes after extended idling in drivethru or such.

It has a JLT catch can, so it's not the PCV. Engine runs strong and smooth, but the clouds of smoke are embarrassing to say the least and very worrying. Dealer is making me come in for 1,000 mile oil changes to document oil consumption levels, but as far as I can tell all we are accomplishing is something I already know ... that yes it's burning oil.

Any history with these engines having issues ?

Not my first coyote Mustang, so I know this is not "normal"

Remove the catch can and take it to the dealer.
And no the Coyote is pretty reliable for the most part.
How did you break it in?

I had bought a brand new 2008 Honda Accord V6. The oil changes were scheduled for 10k miles. The oil light came on at 6k miles. I take it in and the service advisor tells me, "did you bother to check the dipstick?" I didn't bother because the thing is new and supposedly reliable. Well no oil on dipstick. I then went through documentary phase too. I came in every 3k miles and a quart was needed to top off. They took the motor apart resurfaced the heads and nothing improved. At the end Honda said the amount of oil burning is within specifications. I couldn't lemon law for I forget what reason(s). So what I did was swap the oil to synthetic blend and saw an improvement. I then went full synthetic and it was even better. I ended up keeping the car up until 100k miles.

So now that I'm done with my story......LOL. What oil are you running in the car?

Break in of the motor was done normal. Nothing hard or high rpms for first couple of thousand miles.

Near same story as Vato. Always taken to the dealer for oil changes. I bought the Ford Extended Service Plan. Take it in for 2nd oil change at 10k and complain about clouds of smoke. No oil on dip stick, I had not been checking it, (it's a new car, and taken in to dealer for free oil changes regularly, why even think about that) but only 2 qrts low when they drained it. Dealer agrees this is not right.

They've got me doing 1,000 mile oil changes with them and measuring oil usage, which seems to be around 1qrt per 1,000 miles, after 2 consecutive consumption test and refills.

Trying to see if any history with the Gen 2 Coyotes having issues. My 2011 GT did not do this...

The break in consumption is pretty normal, mine used about a total of 5 quarts the first 10,000 miles. Then it stopped using it almost completely after 10,000 which is common too

I recently added another quart of oil. It's been using a quart around 1500 miles. My car is still under 10k. Maybe I will wait until next oil change to complain to dealership. I would like to load 93 tune but I won't want any finger pointing.

It's not so much the consumption that threw up the red flag for me. It was the giant FOG BANK of smoke coming out the tail pipes every now and then. It doesn't do it all the time, but when it does do it, it's big, and it's definitely oil smoke, not coolant or condensation. Oil consumption and start up smoke did not exist at all in the first 5,000 miles, only started post 8,000 miles and is getting worse, not better.

A new car should not spew smoke like some 30 year old truck with 250,000 miles on it...

my car doesn't have any obvious evidence of oil consumption. Nothing on the rear valance, nor any oil where I park.

I haven't paid that close attention to cold starts. I will try to do that.

It would be cool if you could video that, with a go pro or something. I read that compression rings can be good while oil control rings can be bad.

With obvious fogging for mosquitoes, you should request they pull the plugs for a visual, and do compression and leak down and give you the numbers for each cylinder.

Memphis, I was thinking about comparing the cylinder head temp and any other stats on your gauges with us. We could then compare to see if anything is drastically different from us. For instance, my cylinder head temp was reading around 200 deg.

So the car has been back up at the dealers for last couple of days. After talking with Ford they think it may be a bad valve seal or valve guide. A batch of 2016 Coyote motors have been popping up with valve issues, usually on the drivers side head, according to the dealer. They are going to bore scope the engine tomorrow and pull the valve covers off and see what they see and are talking about putting either one or two new cylinder heads on the engine depending on what they see.

#8 cylinder spark plug was so fouled with oil that the dealer tech was surprised the engine was running as smooth as it was.

They are going to tear the engine down next week and see what's going on.

Not good to hear this, but at least it confirms what I already knew, that something was really wrong with the engine, and the dealer is working on making it right.

That's not good news but then again glad it's under warranty. Did you have any engine mods?

Nope, just some Roush axle backs and a Magnaflow resonator.
