Nothing wrong with a wrx, we'll probably own another one some day.

Be prepared to be underwhelmed unless you plan on modding the crap out of it, which then taps into the reliability and risk of Subaru engines. FA is worlds better than the EJ so you do have that going for you if you get the WRX and not the STi.

I realize much of the video this guy was being sarcastic and being a parody of what "WRX Owners Say"...but, when I saw he had a WV license plate...I laughed out loud! I lived in WV (serving in the military) for two years in the late 90's...and I could see this guy...or his type..actually going to the "Sports Bar" to pick up, hmm as he said, "women with meat on their bones." Too funny! But, it does, somewhat, represent a percentage of "Millennial Drivers" today: skinny jeans, hat flipped backwards, ridiculous sunglasses, adding obtrusive and gaudy stickers everywhere on an otherwise nice looking car. Sigh...what hath this latest generation wrought upon the world???!!:frusty::frusty::eyebulge::eyebulge:

Be sure to test drive it first. I have long flirted with the WRX. When I got my 15, I originally planned on a 15 STI but after a test drive it felt a lot slower than my S197. Understeer was worse than the 15 pp I test drove and bought. It didn't help that they wanted $45,000 and acted like it was way too fast to test drive. One day they will upgrade the STI powertrain and I may give them another look but the rest of the performance car world has gotten a lot faster and they have been left behind.

 because some ex FA20DET owner is going to post and argue everything I say that's shitty about the engine. I'll say how the EJ is a better engine and some angry ex Sti owner will argue how he blew up his engine. It never occurs to them that they did it wrong and followed nasiocs bullshit guide to modding. Or he'll cry it was stock and I'll have to remind him 5.0s have died stock nothing is fool proof. I have been trying to avoid posting in it. Contrary to popular belief around here I don't always want to argue and set people straight. Sometimes is tiring.

I 2nd the VW GTI as an option...other than the Subie is AWD, the VW is a better looking car, inside and out and can be tuned-up.....or you can drop STI money for an AWD Golf R.

Another bonus is that VW values have been down due to the TDI issue and deals can be found. Some my talk about spotty VW reliability but I've owned 4 (1 Jetta, 1 GLI, 1 Golf TDI and current Golf TSI) and all have been dead-reliable....far better than the 1 Outback I owned.

I already suggested the golf r. Those things are fast stock, but a simple tune can make them fast as hell.

If you need four doors, AWD and decent power.....I'd at least check out the 2017 Ford Fusion Sport. 325 hp, 380 lb-ft (2.7L V6 twin turbo).

Good car the WRX - but Mustang is iconic - its an experience every time I drive it. In time the WRXs will be gone but there will still be Mustangs vintage and new.
Iconic, schmonic. Heritage this, heritage that. A car is meant to be driven. Who cares about all that heritage crap. The best car for the job is the one you should go with. You shouldn't buy a car based off how much history it has.

My bone stock STI knocked constantly under load. I had it at the dealership twice and they kept telling me nothing was wrong. It actually knocked slightly less with a Cobb tune. I just didn't trust running the Cobb tune in the event the engine finally let go. I have no experience with the Coyote engine, but I know the S197 4.6L never really had an issue like I saw commonly happening on the STIs. Of course every automotive line will have some one-off quality issues. The STI just has them at a much higher rate with the late EJ25. Coming from the engine development world, I feel that they have pushed the engine too far for current emissions regulations. I don't think the EJs are specifically weak (aside from the 2008), but the tuning and fuel controller seem to be far too sensitive. I got tired of the damn thing pulling timing and eventually traded it in. I agree that many Subaru (and even Mustang) owners mod without doing proper research, but victim blaming isn't always an honest approach. We owned 2 EJ25 vehicles before the 2011 STI. We had a 2006 and a 2007 WRX, both of which were open source tuned. Neither one had knocking or detonation issues.

On a side note, if my 2018 behaves like my STI, I will be fighting that one to the bitter end. I have owned many performance cars in stock and modified form, and have never had such a bad experience. I won't put up with it in a $40k car.
