Hi Guys,

I'd like a short throw shifter but it seems like some of them really require a lot of work and skill to install. The Boomba shifter installs easily but I was wondering if there are any other options? Are there other shifters that install from inside the car, or at least don't require unbolting/moving the exhaust or transmission. Thanks in advance!

The Barton shifter did not require removal of the driveshaft or exhaust. I believe the MGW and Tri-Ax also do not.

Just in case, I'm referring to the entire shifter assembly, not just the shifter shaft.

I installed a Barton shifter relatively easy on jack stands. Hardest part was having to cut my stock shifter in half once the supplied Barton pin removal tool broke on me. I didn't have to remove driveshaft or exhaust at all. With any shifter, you just have to remove the trans mount but that's easy.

Fuck Boomba.

I'm running a Steeda Tri-Ax. Installation wasn't terribly easy, but I have very large arms and hands.

I moved the exhaust but did not remove the driveshaft.

Bankss550, why didn't you just cut the exposed part of the roll pin?

I had the same issue as you. I just used the hacksaw to cut the protruding part of the roll pin and was done. I would say that the install is relatively straight forward, but tedious. Not hard by any means.

The majority of the roll pin was still inside the shifter and the provided bolt snapped within 5 cranks on the ratchet. So I tried a punch as shown in the MGW install vids but the "Barton bolt" prevented the pin from moving. Also the "Barton bolt" snapped inside the tool with no way to remove.

Gotcha. The bolt on the barton tool broke on mine, but I was able to remove the bolt using pliers. I can't imagine how big a pain it was to have to cut the factory shifter shaft. :frusty:

I just helped a friend install a Barton in his and the stupid tool failed again to remove the roll pin. The bolt on the newer barton shifter kit was a shiny metal bolt instead of the black bolt that came in my tool. The shiny bolt still failed to remove the roll pin and actually bent while pushing the roll pin. Luckily we were able to back it out and, you guessed it, hacksaw time......:clap2:

Yeah that tool is more of a hassle than anything. I would recommend to anyone to just use the hammer and punch method. That tool will just cost you time and frustration. Other than that, super easy install!

The weakest and worst part of the stock shifter is what you have to remove from under the car. Any short throw lever that reuses the factory "box" and mounting points will still have the same flex and slop issues as the stock.

At a minimum you need to replace that crappy rear mount on the stock shifter box. Barton has a much better mount and a short handle.

http://www.bartonindustries.com/2015-Mustang.html

I'm sure the Steeda is fine too. The Steeda mount you posted above is between the trans and the cross member. It does not address where the shifter box is mounted to the body in the tunnel.
So in a nutshell you are going to drop roughly $260 to kind of make it better. I've seen the Barton on sale through American Muscle for $350. I would personally hold off and wait on another sale and just do it right the first time. Hopefully I'm installing mine this Saturday. Waiting on the forward bushings to show up from the guy I bought it from on the classifieds here.
Have you watched the install video on Barton's website? It's really not that hard.
FYI, there is a Barton on eBay right now with a starting bid of $300 with a reserve and BIN for $400

Also hit up lethal performance since they have 20% off on Barton shifters. Just stay away from that damn roll pin removal tool if you decide on the Barton. I stayed away from the Steeda for 2 reasons. 1. price and 2. You have to assemble the shifter which I feel I shouldn't have to do but that's my opinion. If the MGW came with a pull up reverse I probably would have done that since everyone swears by George and his product. I would research all 3 of those and see what's the best option for you.

Brandon - how do you like the Tri-Ax thus far?
