Hi all, sorry for reusing this thread - I just want to ask about differences between sport and touring variants.

I am just about to start modding my 2016 GT and would like to start with exhaust.
I love the look of this FRPP quad tip setup, but am unable to decide which route to take (touring / sport and axle-back / cat-back).
I am not using my Mustang for daily driving, it's rather fun car than A->B vehicle. I definitelly want it to be more noticable in the streets, but would like to avoid any drone when cruising on highways.

At the beginning I thought Touring axle-back would do the trick, but after reading through the forum I got impression that it's too quiet (almost like stock) setup, so I was thinking about Sport axle-back and later in case I would like it to sound more raspy I would simply go for x-pipe.

What are your thoughts? Is there anybody who was in the same situation? Any advice?
I have the GT350 FRPP/Borla Touring cat-back and it is a very loud and raspy system. So much so that I thought my system had been mislabeled...but I had an issue and Borla sent me new touring mufflers...and they sounded the same. So, I can't imagine how much louder and raspier the sport would be actually. It sounds great, and very 'GT350 like', but just too loud and raspy for me on my daily driver. The car would sound pretty bad-ass on the track I'm sure. Did I mention it's raspy? :D

All other Borla touring systems utilize a center resonator to tone down the sport version. The GT350 does not...it has the same x-pipe as the sport setup. The mufflers look the same as well, but I suppose they have some internal differences. Whatever the case may be, I purchased the Borla center resonator, which is smaller and lighter than the factory resonator, and I got the result I wanted. The sound is totally different from stock, deep idle, nice tone, definitely louder, and zero rasp or drone. 12k miles later and I'm very satisfied.

I haven't looked lately, but when I got mine (from levittown), the cat-back and axle-back were pretty much the same price. I already had a MRT H-pipe, but decided to go cat-back and have all new exhaust, because of the price. Now I have an x-pipe (made for my system) if I ever want to remove the resonator and go back to it.

Good luck with it. Whatever you decide, I think you'll be pleased.

From a performance standpoint isnt the cat back and axle back 2 1/2 inch and not 3 inch pipes?

Hi guys,

thank you very much for all your insight ( BTW. nice ride AV80R ;) ).
The problem in Europe is that everything for Mustangs gets quite expensive with shipping, taxes and other fees - so forexample the difference between Catback and Axleback setups is approx. $1000 :headbonk:
As Lensync pointed out there is no advantage of 3" pipes so I have decided it makes really no sense going for Catback - same pipes, more weight for shipping and higher base price from which taxes are calculated...
I will go with Sport axlebacks, test it with stock resonator first and then decide between FRPP x-pipe, Borla resonator or even H-pipe.
Now I have to wait like a month until it gets deliverd:D - I hope I will be able to keep it for a while as both Touring and Sport are actually ilegal here

Thanks again

Thank you sir! I didn't even realize you were in the Czec Republic. That is a big price difference for sure...and both systems are 2.5" so that isn't a consideration.

I think you'll be fine if you keep a resonator in place. Interestingly, Ford Performance now sells an 'EC-Type' version which includes the Borla resonator. It's neither touring nor sport.

Hi All, I just had the sport GT350 system installed on my car and it was quite a bit louder than stock.. I wanted the look and a little sound but I'd say I got more sound than I bargained for.. Being a manual you really hear it in the car as you go through the gears. Its not my daily driver so I've been dealing with it [life is tough sometimes..lol] and I'm kind of getting used to it. Everyone that I know that have heard it have said it sounds great.. Here's a before and after pic. Livernois Motorsports sold it too me and installed it..I think they had a couple left when they did mine so if you gotta have one they should have it??

Finally my Sport axle backs have arrived and got installed :D I left the factory resonator in and must say that I am really happy with this setup. It sounds really nice & deep yet it is not raspy. When I first drove it last wednesday it was 200km trip after which I tought to myself that it's like 10% louder in the interior than I would want it to be. Then I took it to german autobahn over the weekend (to test what it can do with new SW) and after that I got completely addicted to it (even my GF got used to it very quickly) - definitelly worth every $ :headbang:

Hi, unfortunatelly I don't currently have any video that would do the exhaust real justice... subjectively it's really louder in person...

  • Anyway, here are couple low rpm revs:
  • here is cr*ppy video, but OK sound of acceleration on 1st gear up to approx. 2800rpm with throttle approx. 50% open:
  • Here is an interior vid of my autobahn testing:

Hope it helps, I can definitelly make some more vids later...:)

Hey guys.

Just reading through your experiences it seems a few of you with the sport system, particularly the cat back version experience droning. Have axle back owners experienced the same?

Hi,

I haven't experienced any drone with the Sport axle-back. My lady would kill me if I do anything that would cause drone to our only car. We have done even some long 700km trips and it's perfectly fine.

When I was in a decision making process between CB and AB my local Mustang tuner said they have installed few Sport catbacks and that they have experience with sound dampening of the trunk to make it sound "pleasant" also in the interior - but I haven't seen it myself.

I decided to go the more cost effective way (AB) with possibility to make it louder in the future by replacing the resonator if I want more volume or raspiness.

That looks TERRIBLE. What's with the tiny pipes all recessed inside the bumper cutouts? :barf:

Thinking of getting this same setup with the Touring quads. Any chance you can shoot a video of a start and some revs, I'm worried as well the sound will be too much but I LOVE the look.

Was adding the Borla resonator an easy swap for the issue? Thanks
