Come on. If I can get 37 outta a V8 surely an ecoboost can hit 60mpg. :D

I should have stayed on the A38 for the other 20 miles and seen what I went up to. To be honest; I just tried to replicate your journey; after 35miles I was at 37.8Mpg but that included city driving and a few blips to a group of caterham drivers who were going absolutely balistic seeing the car.

Didn't quite match it but this was a run from the centre of Manchester through busy traffic then M6 / M5 at 65 - 70 (ish - heavy traffic rather than restraint) with a couple of long 50 roadworks thrown in

Aircon and (partially) cooled seat on all the way

Actually quite impressed. Been using Shell V power and a tank of BP's equivalent this morning

On a similar run, ecoboost isn't significantly better - just above 40mpg (I do this often so will record it next time).

What I have noticed is anything about 70mph massively affects mpg. Obviously tuned for drive cycle efficiency but presume Americans pay little real world attention to anything over highway speeds. Am wondering whether this is solvable with a tune or what else it could be

Second you hit the turbo band on the ecoboost the mpg hits the shitter. I can cruise at 77 and itll hold k the bar at 40mpg, if i hit 80 itll plummet to high 20s.
If you drive consistently below the turbos kick then youll cruise high mpg... but kill all the fun

this crossed my mind on the way home yesterday - my thought was 70mph = how ever many rpm = boost. Then I checked and was out of boost at motorway speed. Will have to play again and see exactly what rpm (hence mph) it comes on boost :)

Physics is also at play and driving any car at over 65mph will reduce fuel efficiency. Somewhere between 55 and 65 is most economical. I tend to concisely stick to the speed limit, but it's difficult to drive much below it, especially when everyone else on the road seems to want to drive at 10mph less than the limit or 10 over!

Iirc its about 2150 or so; havent drove her for a week now. Missing her. Just sit in 6th and then set the car to show the turbo gauge, then youll juat watch the rpm to see

Seems to me that you can hold at least 3000rpm steady-state (approx 90mph) whilst still in vacuum (<0psi boost).

Puts to bed the theory that being in boost is the sole killer of mpg - ie if your sensible with right foot and keep at constant speed there shouldn't be anything inherently inefficient.

So I come back to my original question - why are EBMs so much less efficient above approx 60mph that other cars? I know wind resistance increases dramatically etc, but seem to go from 40mpg at ~65mph to <25mpg at 80mph.

Wonder if engine bay is eating too much air, and installing US active shutters to the front grill could resolve this?

Leeds to Penrith in GT with two kids in back and both their bikes AND a big suitcase in the boot! Who says the Mustang GT isn't a practical family car?

Economy is excellent when cruising. I stuck to around 60, but even taking it up to 70 on level ground it would stay at 40+mpg. What kills it is any incline (even slight ones) and sitting in traffic you can watch the average count count down!
