I was wondering if anybody who's had one of these engine opened up before could tell me if the scarring on my timing chain is normal. I noticed it today looking over the car, it looks bad to me for 4000 miles. Amsoil sig series for oil.

No the picture is upside down. This is looking through the oil cap, that's the intake phaser with the little speckles all over it, I don't know what that's about either

I just looked at mine, no specks on the Phaser but the chain underside does have those marks ( I had to look real close and it shows up better in a pic) although not as many as yours. I have 11,000 miles on mine.

Check timing gear yet?
No I haven't pulled anything apart yet, would prefer not to right now. OPG/CG and Ati damper are my next mods, but I was planning on doing them at the end of the season. My initial thought was the crank gear but I don't see how it could make scars on the back of the chain, there shouldn't be anything in contact with the back of the chain that's abrasive enough to cause this that I can think of. I also can't stop thinking about all those tiny shards of chain floating though the rest of the oiling system.

The speckles on the phaser are actually there, but in the picture what looks like chain rubbing on the phaser is just a reflection from the flash when I took the photo.

Beefcake,
Are you talking about the delamination on the chain itself? I just looked at mine and it's the same. I'm about to do opg's and crank gear, should I do guides and chains also? Or is that casting imperfections on links?

Just checked mine, 28xx miles on the car and it looks similar to the others. I'd say it's normal.

I don't think that's scarring at all. I think that's little globs of oil, dirt, and shadow. I'm betting if you could get your finger in there it'd wipe off. Could be wrong, but it looks more like an optical illusion than actually scarring.
