What would you do?

1st I love my mustang GT. Could not be happier with the purchase. However I hate the stock exhaust. I'm also planning on upgrading to the 18 GT if the changes are nice. In the meantime should I just deal with the less than satisfactory stock exhaust. Or go ahead and have a set of axle backs installed. Also if I go to trade car in one year from now will I have to have the stock exhaust put back on?

Hard to say what you should do with your money considering that is purely an emotional decision and who knows how your financial situation is. I have not always been very responsible with my cars in terms of money spent on mods, but lately I have been trying to change that. If it were me, I would wait to see what the 2018 refresh is all about, and make my decision then. In fact that is all I am waiting for before I buy a Mustang. Maybe you could get a used set of axle-backs or something, and make it a very cheap upgrade. Sound is half the reason we buy these V8's, so I completely understand your situation.

As far the the trade in question, no you would not HAVE to return to stock as there is nothing illegal about an aftermarket axelback. It still remains completely smog compliant etc, and does not effect value. I think most people would prefer it, depending how loud you go.

We can't tell you how to handle your money but also it is just an axle back which is a straight forward mod, reversible AND can be left on the car if you trade it in (if you wish). There is also a slight possibility that the same axle back will fit the 2018 model as well.

You can go with either set-up, cat or axle really. Axle is usually cheaper and something easier to change if needs be. Either way you can always swap back to stock (assuming the stock exhaust wasn't cut, though there's probably 1,000 of them floating around eBay et. al). Not to mention you're going to have the thing for what, close to 2 years? And what happens if you don't like the '18 refresh?

Unless you're tight on funds, at least get an axle-back and enjoy it. Procrastination is for shit you don't want to do.

Just buy a cat back, save your stock exhaust. When the time comes switch to stock and trade in. odds are the cat back will fit on the new mustang as well or you could sell it.

Think of it this way, 2018 is gonna make a lot of people trade up, you're probably NOT gonna get a deal out of the trade.

Minor changes might make some tuners dump prices on older mod parts, so you'll likely get some nice upgrades in power / sound / look as they'll push to R&D MY18's features.

Although, I would totally agree on getting a second mustang for 18', cuz you can't ever have enough mustangs.

The aftermarket has a ridiculous number of exhaust systems to choose from. You have a lot of Youtube videos to watch in order to gauge the sort of sound you're looking for.

The first mod I did before anything else was exhaust. You'll need to live with it for at least 2 years, and that's a long time to listen to the tepid stock exhaust. Really it boils down to what you're willing to spend and what sound you want.

What would I do?
If you buy a mustang GT you apparently at least enjoy cars more than the avg commuter so me? I say to hell with what '18 brings. Go full headers back exhaust, GT350 intake manifold and cold air intake of your choice and get it all custom dyno tuned. With a good custom tuner that will put you over 500 horsepower at the crank. Seeing that the GT350 wasn't much more than that I seriously doubt the '18 GT will have more performance than that.
That's not just what I'd do, it's what I'm doing ;)

just get a muffler delete and have an x-pipe put in place of the resonator shouldn't cost more than 3-400 bucks and should suffice in the meantime

Drop 1k and get Corsa sport cat backs. They sound so sexy, and enjoy the sound everyday I drive. Made my car 100% more fun to drive.
