I had major pitting in the clear coat on my trunk, and Ford repainted it under warranty. I currently have 4,600 miles on my 2016 GT that I bought in October, and the paint looks worse than my 2004 Titan! I have chips everywhere, not just in the hood and front bumper, and I can see the clear coat is deteriorating on the roof and right rear quarter panel.

I brought it back to the dealership, and they took more pictures.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Almost 7k miles here and no issues. I'm sure it's an isolated issue, maybe a bad mix of paint or clear coat when spraying your car?? Im sure the dealer will take car of it, if not wrapping isn't a bad option.

Wrapping it's not necessarily a bad option, but it's not cheap, and I shouldn't HAVE to do it top make my brand new car look right.

I have the same car, bought in the same month, and the same mileage. I see nothing wrong yet.

Post some pictures up, I'm curious what this looks like

Back in 2002, Ford had major problems with black 03 mercury marauders having the clear coat start "poxxing" on the roof which would eventually lead to rust. I'm curious if it looks like that.

I'm not sure if mine is as bad as yours, but I only have 3600 miles on mine and it has at least 5 rock chips. I don't live on or near any gravel roads either... And most of them are on the doors and side panels, in fact only two of them are on the front of the car. Is it normal to pick up that many rock chips in 3600 miles / 4 months?

Additionally, the passenger door just under the door handle has a patch of milky looking clear coat. Leaves me wondering if it is defective paint / clear coat or if it can just be "buffed out". And a large the area around it (even though he milky-ness go away) is rough and not glossy smooth.

Also (may or may not be related), the passenger pillar that sweeps up over the door and back down to the rear is not smooth or glossy. Looks like it has increasingly deep swirls on it too. I have never had an electric buffer anywhere near the car.

Was going to ask about it at the first service, but I've also been having some issues with the steering, so maybe I'll have to take it in sooner than later...

My trunk was BAD... real bad. When you ran your hand over it, it felt like sand paper. It's just starting on the rest of the car now. I'm curious to see what Ford progresses, because it looks like this is going to be an ongoing issue for me.

What is up with Ford and there paint jobs? My neighbors brand new explorer had started to pit and rust along the entire edge of the hood which I guess is another common problem with them.

The clearcoat is sprayed on when the paint is still wet, making them bond. Clearcoat shouldn't seperate....at least not from the factory.

Post some pics off the roof.

My rear bumper had a few tiny spots that looked like a walleye fish eye. It didn't concern me enough to take to the dealer. It hasn't gotten any worse.

I've noticed a very unusual amount of chips in my paint. I have 23k miles and drive on the highway a lot so I expect a few here and there but it's really bad compared to some other vehicles I've had with 150k+ miles.

I have quite a few rock chips on the front of my car as well. I have put about 24k miles on her in the past year but honestly a little disappointed in the paint quality. I think they decided to cheap out in the paint department in order to cut costs.

There is no "cheaping out on the paint". All vehicles are painted using the same process, and paint quality and thickness are carefully monitored. There is no formula for saving cost by changing the paint process, any changes would cost more to implement than the amount that they would save. Rarely does a car get through the paint process with the paint being too thin, and when that does happen it will only affect one area, which is obvious.

Stop blaming the car on damage caused by the environment you're driving in. The best paint in the world will still get damaged by rock chips flying at the body panels at high speed. Also, lower cars like the Mustang are more susceptible than vehicles that sit higher off the ground like SUVs and trucks.

I have owned several cars that were driven in the same environment and usually lower than my mustang is, as its still stock height (working on that). I have even been careful with this car not to tailgate from the get go because I know rock chips happen. Of all the other cars the Ford has fared the worse by a far margin and it only has ~25k on it. So maybe Ford didn't change their paint, it very well could have been this cheap from the get go (first Ford for me and also first model year since the plant was retooled for the new body style). My theory is you get what you pay for and cost cutting had to go somewhere to have the performance at this price, which I knew going in.

Really we could point fingers all day, whether it be your paint or my "driving environment" aka normal american roads. The facts are that the paint on my car appears to be cheaper quality than other manufacturers judging by how poorly it has held up.
