Reische 170 thermostat install- what's involved?

Straight forward, if you plan on reusing coolant, drain 1/2 to 1 gallon into a container. Use a socket set, swap out, refill with coolant then top off with distilled water after running car if its low, or coolant.

Super straight forward. I do not consider myself mechanical in the least and I was able to do it no sweat. I forgot the exact tools needed but any basic socket set is all you need and whatever amount of fluid you spill to put back in.

I would most definitely get a re tune. Stock fans kick at 216 and with my re tune fans kick at 196. Normal driving with a/c on i never see above 185.

I would recommend to drain the coolant into a clean container from the valve on the bottom of the radiator. I first tried to do the "quick swap, catch spilling coolant in a bag" method and got the rubber o ring fudged , not realizing this after reassembly I made a gigantic mess under the hood and had to do it the hard way anyway

Definitely drain the coolant as everyone has said. I installed mine yesterday with no mess. I attached a short piece of 11/16 tube I had to the drain nipple and drained it into a gallon jug. I don't know if you have to on newer car but after refilling it I left the cap off while it was running to make sure the air gets out. Squeeze the big lower radiator hose to help move the coolant around. You should put back exactly what you take out.

Another thing that helps purge all of the air out of the system is to run the heater while the cap is off.

Super simple install. Remove intake tube and the housing is right there. Drain radiator from petcock on passenger side. Remove the two 8mm bolts and the thermostat will drop right out. Make sure the stock O ring comes out with it!!! Install the Reische 170, tighten the two 8mm bolts (DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN, don't need hulk strength on these). Put intake tube back on, tighten radiator petcock and re-fill reservoir. I chose not to use the coolant I removed even though it was good and clean. I used straight distilled water, took 1 gallon. Start the car up and leave the reservoir cap off to let all the air bleed. Put the heat on full blast for a while and then turn the AC on full cold and fill reservoir as needed.

This is a great, cheap mod. Tune is required to have the fan settings changed. It's been hot here in FL, heat index averaging 105+. With the AC on, my ECT would be between 196-199* in the city, around 194 on the highway with the stock 180* thermostat. Now, it's 183-185* in the city (at it's absolute hottest) and 181 on the highway. The car has been adding more timing everywhere when watching the knock sensors compared to the stock thermostat.

Is it fine to refill it with a distilled water only without coolant? I am planning to mix it with coolant if its better but I don't know what is the best coolant and how many do I have to mix I heard 60/40 but I'm not sure.

There is no need to drain the fluid. Just use a hose clamp. You will only lose a small amount of fluid however, I installed mine it the amount of time it will take you to drain the fluid.
