A lot of people get wrapped up in the resolution. If you only plan on sharing online, 1080 is more than enough. If you're making movies for your big screen, 4k is great but you better upgrade your computer to do the editing. ;)

Can't agree more. For less than $30US you can get an external mic setup for good sound. This is a GoPro Hero 3+ with an external mic behind the rear bumper:

Think I addressed both of these in my post before you posted ;) ;)!

I use a Vivitar 914HD.
Costs much less than the equivalent GoPro but the quality is near identical and can even record 4K@10fps if you want.

All GoPro accessories fit.

This isn't the best video to showcase its abilities, since I have a black car and it was a really gloomy day in April, but the sound and video quality is superb for £99. I'll record a better video at the weekend if you want.

Mmm, some good stuff now. I bit of further research and I may well order. I do like the look of the cheaper alternatives to the go pro. I could get them and spend more money in accessories such ad mics and mounts

As long as it lasts the NC500 I will be happy.

All mentioned should last the NC500..., unless they fall off somehow and someone runs it over...

I will have Gibbo behind me. His car handles so well that he will be able to avoid and cameras and equipment that fall off mine!

I just did something and I hope I dont regret it. I just brought the Vivitar 914 as recommended above for £74 of Amazon prime. I dont usually do impulse buying but hell, £74!!!

Buy cheap buy twice has always been my favourite phrase...

The cheap cameras also have fakes of those floating around the Internet too so be careful if you go that route.

You honestly can't go wrong with a go pro, but yes the audio is utter garbage and an external mic is recommended. You will need a separate case for that.

You can see how quickly this all mounts up!

Haha indeed, just careful he's not too busy lapping you round the NC500 route ;)!!! You missed my earlier post, could have got one for £58 ;)

(Even cheaper)

the SJ5000 is a lil better than the 4000, but still less than £74! (Which is also still less than the £200-400 a go pro is!!!)

Also - don't skimp on the SD card. If you want to record in the higher resolutions and frame rates the card needs to be a really fast data rate to be reliable

Specs on the go pro site

To a certain extent I agree with you.

If I was in to action sports and was skying, canoeing, mountain biking etc on a reg basis, I would buy the go pr for sure. But this is for one trip, the NC500 and by buying a cheaper camera, I can spend more on other stuff and accessories. I may even get two cameras!

Well, the camera will be here tomorrow, I will be asking advice on SD cards etc after it comes!!
Its weird. I will spend £500 on a front splitter for the Mustang without a thought, even bearing in mind I intend cutting it about but £100 or so on a camera has me in a nervous quiver!

@stevec I'm with @tooley on his post above, get a GOOD (and big) SD card. You're gonna need a massive sized one unless you're gonna export all the files onto a laptop every night and wipe the SD cards etc.

Also - with the Mustang, spending money you know it's longevity, but also it's exactly what you want... the camera you're unsure of on both so are more sceptical ;)!

Manders, are you meant to be working? I am my own boss, what's your excuse??

I do intend downloading to my laptop every night but will prob get a good SD card anyway.

I misunderstood your link earlier, it went to a camera selling at £26 quid. Thats in the realms of if its too good to be true it probably is...too good to be true.

and another word of warning - having bought the camera I then had to spend over £1k on a computer with enough horsepower to edit and store 4K video :frusty:
