Larger Oil Filter for the 2.3EB

A filter with a M22 thread won't work, it will actually slip over the 3/4-16 thread the Ecoboost has.

My Ecoboost has had a FL400S filter since it's first oil change at 1k miles, that was 22k mikes ago.

FWIW, the FL910S filter was first spec by Chrysler back in the early 80s for the 2.2. I started using the FL400S filter back then.

The FL400S filter also allows for an even 6 qts of oil too.

I got a chance to cross-reference it on Purolator's website earlier. It is indeed the PL20195. Like dgc333 mentioned, the threads on the PL22500 won't match up.

I looked this part up and it is another .6" longer than the larger Motorcraft replacement. So now it is 1.38" longer than stock. Any drawbacks to this? I would have to look but I don't remember it being space limited. Would it require more than 6 quarts of oil then? Also, I noticed the Relief Valve PSI is lower 12-15 on the Purolator vs. 20 on the Motorcraft, not sure what that is but any concern there?

Thanks Justin for all of your researching, reading, and then posting the info for all of us to benefit from. Even though I had an oil change done less than 2000 miles ago, I went out and picked up the Motorcraft FL400S filter and 6 qts of PUP. Will be doing the oil change later.

Damn Justin, you're a research machine! What about the WIX 51348, I've been using the Napa 1348 which is a replacement for that.Is the Motorcraft filter better?

I have the WIX 51516XP in my notes as a bigger filter option.

No, there isn't any drawbacks that I've seen or heard of. Lots of friends with FoSTs run the PO filter. The only thing mentioned was making sure it doesn't hang too low, but that's not a problem on the EBM (and wasn't on the FoSTs either). I think 6 quarts would still work out just fine. I might grab one and try it out. The most important thing is just making sure that the oil is within the high/low marks on the dipstick.

No problem. It's nice to be able to just dump the 6 quarts in and go with it. I took measuring the .7 quarts down to almost a science. #nerdlife :lol:

Why do websites consistently say that the Motorcraft FL-400S oil filter will NOT fit Mustang EcoBoost engine? I went through 10 large internet auto sites and they all said that the FL-400S doesn't fit the Mustang? I also checked on the Purolator PL20195 filter...only 1 website said that it would fit.

Because they only recommend the one item that is supposed to fit on the car. I can't say I blame them. They don't have the resources to test fit and/or research what goes on every car or engine. Furthermore, if they recommend an option that wasn't specified by the car's manufacturer they are potentially opening themselves up to liability.

Also, listing more than one option (especially on something like an oil filter, and especially when one is a much different size than the other) will definitely confuse the average consumer who is just stopping in to get a replacement. Hell, I consider myself at least slightly above average in mechanical inclination and car knowledge, and that would throw me for a loop if I walked in to AutoZone and saw both of these oil filters listed in the book for my engine.

51516 wix is the thinner version of the 51515, it fits Fords going back to the 80's. I've been selling filters for 30 years and I don't see how a couple of onces the 515 holds is going to make a difference.

The FL400S used to be that length too. Not sure why Motorcraft started specing with a slightly shorter length. It's funny the Motorcraft filter is made by Purolator too.

If you start looking at the same filter from different manufacturers you will see quite a variation in the pressure that the filter bypasses. The last time I looked the FL400S it was in the 15psi range. The only time the bypass comes into play is when the oil is very cold at start up or you are way past due for an oil change and the media is starting to plug up.

The extra surface area of the filter improves cooling of the oil. Extra media reduces the pressure drop across the media, filter is less likely to bypass. Additional oil volume means less work for each molecule of oil between changes.

Is it significant in the big scheme of things, probably not. But with no down side why not?

So in your opinion would it be better to go with the Motorcraft FL400S or the Purolator PL20195? Seems like by specs the Purolator is better but not sure how important that bypass pressure is. I know when my car starts cold it is at 80 psi which to me seems VERY high. Taking off easy I will still see it go up to 90.

I use both without any thought. I use the Bosch equivalent too which is also made by Purolator and it is the longer length.

I choose based on what's available and price.

It doesn't likely make any difference when you first start the car it is likely bypassing with either filter.
