I have an ecoboost mustang with 8k miles. I did an oil change recently and noticed 2 inch diameter oil leaks under the car each day. I inspected under the car and the oil filter was pretty wet. When installing, I didn't really count the 3/4 turn past tight and just hand tightened as much as possible. This was with a Motorcraft filter and I covered the gasket with oil before installing, seems odd that it leaked. I just installed a new oil filter and I'll check to see if there is still oil leaking tomorrow. I'm posting because I'm interested if anyone else has had this issue. I've done all my own oil changes on all my cars for the last ten years. This is the first time I've had an oil filter leak this much. I really hope this is the cause of the oil leak and there is not a bigger issue.

It might have been an anomaly with this particular filter. I haven't read or heard of anyone else having similar issues. It sounds like you followed the right steps though, so I'd just keep an eye on the new one and go from there.

My oil pressure sensor leaked which is right above the oil filter, you might wanna check that.

I'd also make sure that if it were changed, that the rubber gasket on the inside of the old filter wasn't stuck to the block. I have changed many a oils before and that old rubber gasket against a new rubber gasket will cause oil to seep out between the two.

Ditto. There is also a chance to rip the gasket when screwing/unscrewing. I had to replace it with changing the oil filter this last go around.

Thank you all for the responses. I changed the oil filter, inspected everything, carefully installed a new filter, and the car is still leaking. I'm guessing this has something to do with the oil pressure sensor. I can't begin to describe how disappointed I am that a new car with 8k miles already has an oil leak... I guess I'll take it to the dealership for a warranty repair.

I just wanted to give a follow-up to this thread in case someone else experiences the same problems. After two trips to the dealership and not having the car for 3 weeks, Ford diagnosed that the oil leak was from the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Parts were replaced under warranty. I've had the car back for a day and not noticed any leaks so far. I'm still really disappointed that this happened before the car got to 10k miles, and surprised that there aren't more reports of rear main seal failures occurring. I guess I'm just lucky. With that said, it felt good to get my car back. Everything about the car feels pretty amazing especially after not driving it for 3 weeks.
