Hey guys

My Mustang GT has just clicked over 1,600km, when cold on start up it has started to make very distinctive rattle noise, once the revs drop to normal idle the rattle clears, also when cruising on the highway off throttle you can here it in the cabin, has anyone heard it before or know whats causing it?

I'm thinking something has come loose on the exhaust system.

I have attached a link below of the noise.

Had my gt serviced for the 3000k and the dealer noticed the same thing took me out to the workshop so I could hear it myself it seems to be coming from the resonator not as loud as yours however but the same type of sound a slight ticking noise like a baffle vibrating.
He has made a note on the service log and will look at it when a few more is on the clock most likely replace the exhaust under warranty

The sound seems too cyclic and constant. Exhaust rattles are usually that, a rattle and sporadic.
Can you pin point the area its coming from? Poop the bonett and listen there.

It might be nothing, but I would take it straight away to be checked.

Resonator needs to be replaced. I have the exact sound.

Part took 3 weeks to get here, and Ford did not send the flanges, etc. Make sure the service department orders those, too, as the parts computer did not display any extra parts were needed with the resonator when my service manager ordered it! So I would have had to wait longer for the rest of the stuff to arrive. Did not end there...

I don't know what happened exactly but for some reason this shipping of extra parts was not going to happen...so my service manager is having Ford replace the whole exhaust.
My appointment is next Wed.

BTW I am in the US.

Reminds me of my mates old LC Torana in the early 80's when a lifter was faulty but this does sound like it's coming from underneath. Hope it is only the resonator and glad I am planning to go for an aftermarket exhaust.

Doesn't sound to healthy to me. Would have been nice to have given it a rev or three in the video. Hard to tell from a video. Best case scenario something loose on the exhaust system, maybe something touching the drive belts, or as Vinno mentioned, tappets.

Check for oil, and take it straight to your local doctor (dealership).

It only happens a certain rpms, around 1,000 to 1,500rpm. So its really prominent on cold start up as the car idles up around those rpms to start with. But below those rpms and above the rattle is gone it revs nice and clean. There's no evidence of power loss.

I'll pop the bonnet tomorrow morning and I'll have a listen to see if its coming from there, but in person it sounds like its going more centre to rear of the car.

Well bit of good news, had a machanic friend chuck the car on a hoist, the rattle is coming from the suitcase resonator. So for now going to get a warranty fix done on it.

The future plan is for a magnaflow system but right now funds are needed for other things.

I noticed mine had started making a similar noise on deceleration yesterday afternoon on my way home from work. After listening to it for a while, it definitely seems to be coming from the resonator.

I wonder if they will tell me to get bent on warranty given that I have an axle back exhaust installed?
