Worth a 3-hr drive for specific car?

I am looking for a particular combination of race red and ceramic interior on an Ecoboost Premium automatic, and the only one is an almost 4hr drive away. I'll have to take the Amtrak, which will take even longer.

I communicated over email and the manager guarantees they can beat Koons' price by at least $500. I am tempted but if I go all the way out there and it turns out they pull something on me, it'll be a complete waste. The drive home is long as well. Thoughts? The alternative is a race red with ebony interior at Koons closer to me.

Get what you want no matter how far you need to go... I had to take an airplane and a train to reach my dealer and then a 6-7 hour drive home again... Was a blast ;)

Your other options are:

1) have your dealer buy the car from the other dealer. It will be transported by Lord-knows-who, might go on a pickup pulling a 3 car trailer or be transported with (leaky) used cars above it :doh: Plus, your dealer will probably have you pick up the shipping costs (I'm guessing ballpark around $300 for such a short distance).

2) order what you want from your dealer. Most dealers are quoting about an 8-10 week wait (which seems pretty reasonable based on my recent experience). You know that other than delivery mileage, you're the only one who has ever set foot in and driven the car

You will probably get a better deal if you find one already sitting on a dealer lot (as you have...). Then the dealer has the car you want, and has incentive to sell it to you. When you order a car from a dealer, the dealer has the upper hand (since you basically said "only this car will work for me"). Car buying 101

Distance is nothing to care about. If you get your spec its worth it if its not insane $$$. The drive home will be a joy.

Twice in the past three years two different dealers went out of state (300+miles) to get the car I wanted.

In both cases they traded a car on their lot for the car I wanted. They both have retired people that drive out and come back with the cars.

The deal was made prior to them locating the car so the cost came out of their profit.

If you take the train, buy a round trip ticket. If they mess with you on price, say you're ready to use the return ticket

Don't be afraid to go get what you want. I was at a dealer 3 hrs from home on a business trip once. Told the salesman I had no intention of buying because I lived so far away. Never the less he took the time to answer all my questions and when the time came for me to buy I drove up to see him because he went the extra mile.

I know it's not the same circumstances but if they got what you want, get it. See if they'll fax/email you a firm quote first.

Make 1000% sure the 45-70 mph driveline vibration is not present, if it is - RUN !!

Why not just go to some local Ford dealerships and order your exact car, work out a good deal and get it in writing?
I did that with my '16 Ram Sport 4X4 regular cab. I waited 7 weeks, but it was worth it. Good luck!

I drove 3+ hours for mine, but it was late August and availability wasn't great. If you have a nice price lined up before you get there, then sure.

I'd rather not wait for the car and it looks like I'll definitely get a better deal on a car already in the lot. Just impatient!

I've emailed and they're trying to get me to come in. I said not until they give me the numbers and offered to put down a refundable deposit.
