I'm looking to buy my first mustang and I'm set on going for a GT Premium. My only final debate is if I should place my custom order now, or wait till more details are unveiled about the 2018. I've heard the common themes of 10 speed, more power, tweeked front end and headlights.

I'll be getting the automatic (wife's requirement to get one) but what I really want to know is, is a 10 speed automatic worth it for the driving experience and MPG? I've never driven anything more than a 6 speed manual/auto so adding 4 more gears doesn't really sound that fun.

Can anyone provide any insight on what a 10 speed driving and MPG expectations could be like? I know there will always be changes happening every few years so I'm okay with that, but this time changing the transmission by adding 4 gears seems like a big deal.

Thanks everyone, I've really enjoyed reading this site and learning more of what everyone likes/doesn't and other insights!

Listen to this man :D

If you can, get yourself a drive of something with the 8-speed ZF (so, any new BMW/Camaro/Charger/Challenger etc) you'll see it's a superb 'box, always seemingly in the right gear. I'm hoping Ford have benchmarked this 'box. If they have, the 10-speed will be superb. The 10-speed is in the '17 Camaro ZL1 and the 3.5 Ecoboost '17 F150s. In the ZL1 it seemed to get great reviews. In the Mustang, I'd hope for at least 1, maybe 2 MPG added to the average.

With any luck, we'll see the '18 Mustang at a major autoshow early next year (Detroit, is my hope)

:)

Make your decision after someone captures some spy photos of the new front end restyle/pre-production cars and there is more information on engine and mechanical upgrades.
The 10 speed automatic is a no-brainer.

As long as the front end looks good, I'll very likely be trading in the '16.
And if a Mach 1 is released...another no brainer for the trade in.
Wish we new something about a GT 500!!

IMHO...wait for the 2018.

In my experience of test driving challenger, camaro and mustang, I have to say that the ZF box in the challenger made a huge difference. The box alone is worth the wait.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm going to hold off and wait for some more leaks and/or announcement from Ford. I'm hoping something will show up at the auto circuit this winter.

I'd just wait for the S650. If I were you. ORRR maybe the following model will have even better stuff after that?

Would you give the same advice for manual buyers? Only thing stopping me is the really short gear ratios in the current 6 spd manual... 3rd gear by 60mph.. yuck. I want a GT PP that has the GT350 ratios in a perfect world. Maybe a t56 or t3160 swap..

The Tremec 3160 features the following ratios: First Gear: 3.253:1, Second Gear: 2.233:1, Third Gear: 1.611:1, Fourth Gear: 1.243:1, Fifth Gear: 1.00:1, and Sixth Gear: 0.629:1.

At what point is a manual too many gears...7,8,9? It seems like those who like to row never get tired of it?

They don't need to add any more, they just need to put more MPH between the ones already there.

So is the 10spd the main draw? I was holding out hoping for aluminum body. Is that a possibility or will that happen the next redesign?

For 2018 Mustang maybe 10sp AT will be available by then. Aluminum body pro will be S650, current Mustang are selling well, there are no reasons for Ford to stop the production and retools for aluminum body.

:lol:I'd wait for the 2025 anniversary edition.
Or maybe the 2026, just to get the bugs out of the first run.
Ten years goes pretty quick.

But I heard they are adding hover for 2030. You are definitely going to want to wait for that.
