MT-82 mods and oil swap

Thanks for chiming in. So I'm thinking the best thing to do to not worry about a warranty claim is to leave the stock tranny oil and just do the mgw shifter. Come to think of it, Ford could probably deny a warranty claim with the mgw shifter installed too! :frusty:

I think I will go the RP and MGW route when my car arrives and not worry about it. I'm not overly hard on gearboxes anyways and the MT-82 isn't as bad as it used to be so I should have nothing to worry about.

I honestly doubt they would analyze the fluid if anything would have happened (but you never know) also doubt the fluid would be source of any issues. One way to go is use the additive that manual calls for - Ford recommends it (aforementioned dealer showed me in their tech manual) after synchros replacement and some people reported that adding it to the original fluid smoothed the transmission out.
I would probably change the fluid to RP at some point as I still have it, just either do it myself or at other place than a dealer.

Yes I agree on being easy on the transmission while cold: that's a given with anything mechanical. Like KZ said, I doubt they will send the oil off for analysis if something went wrong. I will be doing the RP fluid swap and MGW shifter install when I get my car.

Just keep in mind that Royal Purple has a very distinctive purple color and will be immediately identifiable as not being the stock fluid.

I have had the RP in my tranny for 16k of the 21k miles on my car. I put the RP in last winter and it immediately made an improvement in the cold notchiness, this winter now that the tranny has some miles it is even better.

You don't think that after a few thousand miles Royal Purple would look pretty much like any other fluid?

FWIW, I have somewhere around 200 miles on my MT82 since I did the RP fluid swap and shifting action is MUCH improved.

Can't imagine it would go from dark purple to dark brown. The factory fill was still an Amber color after 5k miles.

FWIW, I just drained the rear axle oil from my truck over the weekend. After 80K mile since I put it in, it was still amber/honey colored. I'd have to believe that the potential contamination from a hypoid R&P set is worse than what you'd see in a transmission that's running well, so it is perfectly reasonable to expect a lube that has a distinct color to still have that color later in life. If it is not, there's a bigger problem.

This! Or just buy ford motorcraft trans fluid and keep it somewhere just incase! The swap is really easy! I also use RP and made a huge improvement especially at temps -20 to 40 degrees!
