in this case, it sounds like a worn sync. does it still grind with a double clutch?

You could upgrade the shifter, but I suspect the problem will continue, and you will mainly just lighten your wallet $500 or whatever.

if its conspicuous, you may be able to get it fixed under warranty
It is much better with I double clutch, no grinding, just a kind of notchy feeling (even though I expect butter smooth with double clutch).

The thing is my car has just over 1000 miles on it, and I have never driven it hard. But it came with 60+ mile on it; maybe someone test drove it hard?

sounds like a worn sync. With 60+ miles, who knows. I am not sure what happens, but possibly just some high speed down shifts. For the 1/2, maybe driving at 30mph, and someone forcing into 1st as they are approaching a light.

you could test drive a new Mustang on the lot, and do a relative compare.

Sometimes it is hard to get out of first gear (with clutch pressed to the floor of course) when doing 1-2 shifts (so car moving), with a feeling similar to grits or metal particles between sliding surfaces. When not moving, I can shift to all gears smoothly.

I thought with a bad sync, you could still get out 1st gear easy enough, but then upshifting to 2nd gear would be a tricky. Only 1/2 is a problem?

Once in a while, I can experience 3-4 grinding/lock-out. As 1-2 and 3-4 are all in one direction (shifter backwards, linkage arm forwards), I have wondered if the sloppy linakea arm could be the culprit.

Along with syncs, I think there can also be shift linkage and clutch problems. Has the car been looked at by a dealership service center? Your car should be shifting clean, considering its new. If you are confident in your manual transmission skills, then its either a defect, or the car got abused in those first 60 miles.

I would like it to be a linkage problem, as this would mean easy fix (and should also be solved by a shifter upgrade).

I wouldn't upgrade the shifter trying to solve a transmission problem. First get the transmission fixed, then get some miles on it to be sure its really fixed, and then upgrade the shifter if you want to do that just for fun.

I see. Will visit the dealership tomorrow and see what they find.

Went to the dealership. After seeing my list of issues (1-2 grinding/lock-out, clunk when stepping on clutch, noise when shifter is to the left), the service person advised me to come back on Monday, leave my car there, and give me a loaner car.

Not complaining, just stating what happened. I was actually ready to drive a technician around and reproduce the issues to them.

I have a Barton shifter currently and I experience this same 1-2 grind while shifting. I feel it is even worse because the Barton is a very stiff shifter. I really hate the grinding feel and like others have said it gets better when the car warms up. I am thinking about getting trans fluid changed to a high quality oil.

If anyone has done anything that has actually worked to help get rid of this issue let me know!!!

Also it is worth noting that I will soon be switching over to the full Steeda Tri-Ax shifter. I don't think the Barton is causing the problem so this is unrelated!!
