So why almost a 2 year push up date? Are they worried that the S550 wont be able to compete with the current cars in terms of weight/MPG/etc?

I mean they had a roadmap and this is a BIG deviation from it.

Makes me wonder if anything else is shifting on the S550 now. What's odd is no mention of a face lift for the Mustang at all in this doc...

I wouldn't count on a totally new design... Next program is S650 up from S550 program names are too similar for a total reboot.

Should be interesting to see the changes...maybe even an Eco-v8.

Well considering the Mustang usually gets updated every 5 years, it doesn´t surprise me a 2020 new model at all.

Ever since 94 - 99 was the launch of new model (new edge on same platform)
05 New Platform - 10 redesign (same platform) then again for 13 (minor changes).
15 New Platform - 20 redesign is actually expected, with maybe minor changes in between.

I´d be surprised that its a new platform honestly and not just the usual exterior / interior changes over the current platform.

Ford if you are reading this here is the wish list for the s650 mustang gt!

Be sure to bench the regular gt against a six gen 1le
Be sure to bench the gttp or gtpp against a gt350r
Be sure even the loaded premium gt straight line acceleration 0-60 is less than 4 seconds and quartermile at high 11 to low 12 seconds for a manual
Be sure the car looses at least 200 lbs
Be sure to make the magna ride suspension standard
Be sure the car is more aerodynamic and provide the drag coefficient as a proof
Be sure the mpg is increased for both city and highway
Be sure to make the led lights standard
Be sure to include HUD and heated steering wheel as an option
Be sure the premium sound system is Boss equal or better with real 12-14 speaker sound system powered by at least 750 watts
Be sure to get rid off the getrac and upgrade to tremec or better trans
BE SURE THE THUD IS GONE and no it is not normal
Be sure the tranny still shifts smooth below 30 degrees no more grinding
Be sure to use more soft touch materials inside the car
Be sure the body panel allignments are spot on
Be sure the car has at least 19 gallons of fuel tank
Be sure to price it right, it is ok to pay a little more for better quality and performance

Be surprised then. The refresh is already happening for 2018 MY. The S650 should be a wholly new car and if so, it's happening a lot sooner than it has in the past. New S550 in 2015, 2016, 2017, refreshed in 2018, 2019, 2020, new S650 in 2021.

They need to just make a small twin turbo V8 instead of going to a twin turbo V6. Weld two of their 1.5L Ecoboosts together to make a 3.0L twin turbo V8. They're already making 400hp out of a 3.0L V6 for Lincoln so by the time 2020 rolls around they should be able to get 450-500hp out of a 3.0L V8. And share a detuned version with the F-150 to spread the costs around. You know the truck guys want a V8 too.

These are my expectations as well. 10 years out of the basic platform in terms of chassis/suspension.

Body work can be remolded a dozen times.

As mentioned above, P=Production. I am 99% certain because these acronyms are used by the Product Supply people I interact with at work.
I worked in production.for Daimler/Chrysler. SOP was in fact Start Of Production and EOP was End Of Production.
This is off the subject but I have an ETA of 3/29 for my Shelby GT350R. Just couldn't help myself. I'm excited.:headbang:

Cool, looking forward to it. It needs to drop about 400 lbs.

Be sure to price it at $40K+ /s

Seriously, no body wants their stock GT to ride like a 1LE Camaro. A PP/TP sure, but not the base car. This is a GT car after all.

-Magneride on stock car is costly, especially with a soft GT suspension. There shocks should be reserved for a more focus track package.

I agree that that the S650 will be an evolution of the current S550.
We will see all aluminum body panels and a curb weight of 3400 lbs.
2.7 EB, 3.5 EB, 4.6-5.0 SC Coyote and 5.2 SC Voodoo seem like reasonable engine options.
May see the end of manual transmissions except for the very highest performance models.
Minimal restyle/upgrades for 2018.

I think the evolutionary nature is correct. Unlike the Camaro the Mustang only has itself, and Ford Performance variants/ racing to advance itself. I don't think the plan was reactionary. To any vehicle, more over I think to sales the success of the platform.

I think it seems like Ford positioned itself in a pretty good way with regards to the Mustang in terms of going another 50 years, and being the standard for Fast Fun and Affordable.

Road & Track is now using this site as a source. Though I don't agree with the tone of their article.

It's not a bad idea to push up the generation cycle if Ford feels it must, but honestly just continue to add power and performance to really outshine the quicker Camaro. The S550 looks much better than the Camaro. Changing the shape isn't the problem, if it can even be argued that there is a problem.
