also the reason you see more drivers side failures is that the axle nuts aren’t reverse thread on that side, so the normal torque from accelerating is in the ‘loosen’ direction. In that case checking it regularly probably helps.
Would heavy braking tend to loosen the passenger side?

Possibly, but remember heavy braking tends to load the front and the rear doesn't see the same forces.

I've not had a problem after tightening both sides, only left side had a knock. I've done 65000ks.
Are the bearings actually failing or just coming loose?
