You wonder how people survived in the 50-80s driving in the snow, with RWD and way worse tires.

We had a 1972 impala, 1968 Dodge Dart and a 1978 Plymouth Fury when I was growing up in PA , hills and snow .

True but those cars weren't made of plastic and had big steel bumpers so if you hit a snow bank at low speeds, nothing happened to the car.

do you find that there is too much tail happiness going on when loading up the tirewell? i want to somehow move my paving stones to as far as i could over the centerline of the rear suspension in hopes of making the weight distribution better this year...
I don't put any weight in the back. In my opinion it isn't needed in a modern car... or I should say any Mustang that I've owned that was model year 2011 or newer didn't need it. I don't like weight in the back because we will get a relatively nice day and I will be driving in my normal way . . . and throw that extra weight around the back of the car. I hate to get the car all scratched up and dirty - even if it is the trunk space.

I do run snow tires, though. I wouldn't be without snow tires in the winter and true summer tires when it's warm enough. I quit running all seasons on the Mustang. I think they are a waste of money.

i had my first snowfall of the year today. ugly as hell. snow mode + traction control on combine to be the worst nanny ever. i ended up disabling both because it was so slippery the service advancetrac display came on along with the ABS fail warning.

as for my paving stones they are wrapped in burlap with shipping straps around them. easy in easy out. i used to carry bags of kitty litter for the weight and to spread out should i need extra traction on ice but i ended up splitting one bag open at the seams inside the trunk and there was kitty litter everywhere... sigh.

i was thinking of heading out to the parking lots to practice but i think i'm going to take a pass for now after what happened to this poor bastard last night:

My GT with Blizzak WS80s was a total champ in the ~5" we got yesterday. I never even got close to having a traction issue.

can't wait for everything to freeze later this week. city crews did absolutely nothing to prepare... no sand, salt, brine, plowing... nothing.

Im sorry to hear about your situation! It strange how unexpected the winter season is for city crews all around the globe. Germany is no different. Keep your spirits up and best wishes for you on the road.

With stock'ish height and winter tires, you should be mostly fine.

Nokian fan over here - I have Hakka R2s on all my cars. It might be worth it to go studded in Montréal for the hills. It's pretty flat in Winnipeg.

Salt will be a thing and you should try to clean the underside of your car often.

I am heading into my third winter with the S550 and Dunlap Winter MAXX tires. The first winter was the worest in Boston's recorded history. The car with winter tires and snow mode makes the car so good in snow and slop I never saw the need to use my beater 4x4 pickup.

Could be worse...

People always forget to release the brakes. You have no control with locked tires...

I've slowly but surely converted friends and family over to switching to winter tires. They've all said 100% worth it but had no idea it'd make such a difference.

Good to know. I've been thinking about getting those tires.
