Yeah like others said, buy a car and hit the track. Your near stock GT will make for a good car to get your feet wet. Save your money for the 4 Ts: Tools, Tires, Truck & Trailer.
I was in a similar spot a while back. I was a put off my 2015 base GT after driving it during the winter. You...
Don't get me wrong, I bought the Mustang vs. other similarly priced sports cars precisely because it was the only one that scared me.
On the first day of ownership, I unexpectedly wiggled the rear end accelerating out of a yield. I gave it too much pedal because I was used to driving a turbo...
I meant more how the nannies let the driver get into trouble. I'm sure Ford could have thrown money at making it .. safer for inexperienced drivers? But they chose not to.
We, as track rats, have to blow all the engines so that 18 year olds aren't driving S550s in 10 years.
Well I'm happy I'm not the only one. Something that I will surely change.
The one rain day I felt pretty confident in the transitions but on the straight? I probably had this hilarious blank stare of death. It didn't help that the puddles were cooling my front driver and I don't have much...
I've had quite a few moments like these driving in the winter. At some point, I had to turn both the Traction and Stability nannies off because the car kept understeering unexpectedly in the snow. This caused the rear-end to go all over the place but at least the traction would break in expected...
Let me say that I really appreciate all the technical talk about the non-PP brakes. I took it hard on the OEM rotor+pads for one lap and after 3 transitions I lost all confidence (on 265/45R18 RE71R). I've since installed data acq so we'll have video and live data the next time I go out. My...
My research led me to believe that the 4pt and nothing else would be ok as long as you were driving 6/10-8/10ths. You have to consider that the airbags might not work the way they are supposed to (which is a risk with helmets anyways) and that you might get more energy passed to your neck (the...
My first thread on this forum was something like "Is there any reason I shouldn't track a S550 GT", and while that was a few years ago, no one could come up with a good reason to avoid it. I've come up with a few of my own though:
1. It will be expensive. It's a heavy, high power machine that...
I'm in for thorough discussion about aero. I'd expect the turn key racers to have it "figured out" but buying the aero front-end off a GT4 from Kohr is big bucks and the adjustable wing isn't available (or rather even more $$$).
Considering the cost of renting a tunnel (which I would gladly...
Something that was recommended to me was to have two sets of cheaper wheels+tires instead of going all out for maximum grip. That way you can compare different tires and see which ones you prefer.
The asphalt at Gimli is a little rough around the edges. Some guys get their tires at Costco or...
Depends how hard you plan on driving. I'd keep an eye on oil temps. Take it easy on the brakes. I wouldn't be too worried about staying in the seat with street tires. If you can handle it, turn off the traction nannies off (but please only do so if you know how it will affect the car). Get to...
WHY NOT BOTH
I wish I fit in a Miata :(
If you want to be competitive you have to work backwards from class rules, expected competition, etc. or ya get a dedicated cone crusher like a FFord.
6'3" here and it's a tight fit but I make it work. The S550 is on the larger side of cars. I would be honestly interested in cars that have more room. You could install buckets a little lower - or maybe take the trim off the roof for a *bit* more room?
Any kind of driving will improve your understanding of the car's handling. Heck even sim (video games) would help a little.
I read somehwere that Ford offered a driving school in GTs.
What are you hoping to do "better" at the HPDE?
You bought a sports car! Go do sports car stuff and have fun...
Shedding weight on the car will also help brake performance. Admittedly, weight mods quickly run quite a bit more expensive then the OEM "Brembo" kit. Tires are a factor too, more grip means more heat (from the little I know). Also, and this is from a rough analysis, the loose front end on the...
