Tirerack sells Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D and Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II, Winter Sottozero 3 and Blizzak LM-32 in 20" size. Anyone know if the Pirelli's are good? They're quite a bit cheaper than the Dunlop and Blizzak tires.
Ford uses/used those during GT350 development and validation...295 all around.

i did 5 winters with my old s197, but only two of those winters had any real snow. traded it in for my s550 and put my winters from the old car on the new one. pirelli sottozeros was the only option available at the time (because brembo), but i had michelin pilot alpins in the past on another car and those are better when it gets really white outside. i also have my two trusty paving stones that will find a home in the trunk for the really bad days.

Thanks for all the help guys!

It seems as though the moral of the story is that doing a Montreal winter is doable.

I spoke to a car mechanic today who highly recommended studded Nokians for the Stang. He said if I don't want to have trouble getting up icy hills, getting stuck in deep snow, and fish tailing everywbere, then that's the way to go.

Your mechanic hasn't driven a newer Mustang in the snow. It's actually difficult to make the car fishtail. I have taken my 2011 V6, 2011 GT and 2015 GT into icy parking lots to learn in a safe environment how the cars would behave when it was slippery and I applied too much throttle for the available traction. You pretty much have to turn off the traction control or pull the handbrake to get the car to fishtail significantly.

I do agree that snow and ice tires or even studded if they are legal in your area will be very helpful in deep snow and on steep hills.

We had some light snow a few days ago while I was at work. I was still on my P Zero's, so I just put the car in wet/snow mode for the drive home and, wow, that really mode really kills the cars power. I can't imagine having any issues with snow when running winter tires and wet/snow mode.

Hills can still be a little tricky. especially hills windy hills. But its doable most of the time with good snow tires.

Yeah I can see that. I'll be testing out my winter tires tomorrow since we're due to be getting some rain and snow. Looking forward to it, lol.

Just get real quality snow tires on all fours,(nice to be able to stop) not that cheap crap, and dont even try with the pirellis thats on it,i tried... and a bunch of weight it the back (at least 200lbs)I fill up the spare tire hole w sandbags on mine. and you can go most anywhere you will need to.Just turn off that traction control and get some wheel speed! I drive mine in BC mountains yr round. In big snow. I drove my 97 tbird for 18 yrs, same basic suspension and weight, up to work on the mountain ski resort. Nothing beats rwd for control in winter for me. I could always turn, and you want that on my roads.
Better yet, go find a slippery lot and practice throwing it around, lots. It will help. Besides, its fun!

do you find that there is too much tail happiness going on when loading up the tirewell? i want to somehow move my paving stones to as far as i could over the centerline of the rear suspension in hopes of making the weight distribution better this year...

The more weight i get in the trunk, the less tail happy it is.
No doubt you could overdo it, but i never have..Car is always front heavy and bites good on the corners, I rely on the loose back end to get me around corners when its needed.

I think my Civic is worse in snow than a S550 :D

Worst thing you can do it have the car lowered. Keep it stock height and it really goes a long way in deeper snow.

I have the factory 20" wheels and bought a set of AMR 19"s with Dunlop Winter Sports. No problems with NJ winters.
